USC Class of 2017 Applicants!

^ * Congrats to all who were or will be accepted!
Note: I typed it on my phone. lol

Iā€™ve posted stats on the decisions thread. Sorry I canā€™t reply to private messages - Iā€™m a new member and donā€™t have enough posts yetā€¦

Good luck to everybody!

I live in the OC and I got nothing. Iā€™m a NMSF. confused.

Just because youā€™re a NMSF does not guarantee anything.

Whereā€™s your source?

Iā€™ve also posed my stats in the decision thread. I can respond to pmā€™s if anyone has any :).

Another friend of my daughterā€™s who lives around the corner from us got in. Both boys we heard from today got offered full Presidential scholarships. What kills me is that neither consider USC their first choice and my daughter does! I am praying that the School of Cinematic Arts is a little slower because they have to examine films and portfolios. Also, they did not get all of her letters of recommendation so her application was delayed in going to the admissions committee. According to the secretary there, there were so many people applying to the school with missing letters that it took them a week just to get through all the emails of the re-sent letters.

The scary thing is that my daughter has really good stats but the only thing that really matters in the school of animation is her portfolio. It was good enough to get accepted to Chapman University with a half tuition scholarship, but the caliber of applicants to USC is probably a lot higher. We know someone from her art school who got admitted to the program and she didnā€™t hear until almost April 1 so it is possible that they donā€™t make a decision until they see all the portfolios, even the ones submitted after Dec. 1. Since they only take about 20-25 people, they probably want to make sure they get the best. It is going to kill me to wait two more months to find out! By then all her friends will probably have heard from their schools, even the UCā€™s, and she will be the last one to know where she is going to college.

Sorry to ramble but it relieves my stressā€¦

does anyone know if the jewish leadership scholarship counts as a big name and we will receive notification tomorrow?

maddogmo- I believe the only ones that are being sent out now are for Mork, Trustee, Presidential, and some Deans

I agree NMSF donā€™t have any guarantee. There are 16,000 NMSF. It wouldnā€™t make sense for a school to guarantee anything to a group that large.

^I think NMSF is less of a guarantee and more just a overlap of applicants. My hunch is that NMSFs are just more competitive than the average applicant because of their test scores which makes them more competitive for scholarships? If you look at last years(?) or the year beforeā€™s threads, there was actually a NMF who was denied.

maddogmo- I canā€™t respond to private messages yet because Iā€™m new, but I believe scholarship interview dates are spread around February and March. Iā€™m not sure if everyone has an interview, but I know my older brother did for the Presidential scholarship.

If a NMF is accepted by USC and names USC as their first-choice school by the deadline (end of April), they will receive the USC NMF Presidential 1/2 tuition scholarship plus an extra $1,000 per year. No interview is required.

NMSF status unfortunately does not guarantee admission, and NMSF are not invited to interview based solely on the NMSF status. Some NMSF ARE invited to interview for the ā€œregularā€ scholarships (Trustee, Mork, Stamps, Presidential), but that is coincidental* as the National Merit Corp has not yet notified USC of finalist status - USC has no way of knowing right now who is and who is not a finalist.

Many, if not most, NMF do not fnd out about acceptance decisions until April 1st, but rest assured that if you are 1) accepted by April 1st, 2) are a NMF and 3) name USC as your first-choice school you will receive the USC NMF Presidential 1/2 tuition scholarship.

*Coincidental only because USC hasnā€™t been notified of NMF status - NMF are often among the most qualified in the nation and may be invited to interview based on all the amazing things in their applications.

Hi Alamemom!!!

@Smother, technically no one has yet been offered any scholarship - they have been accepted with the opportunity to interview for the stated scholarship. Some will be bumped ā€œupā€ from Presidential to Trustee, others will be bumped ā€œdownā€ from T to P, and unfortunately, some will be invited to interview for P or T, and be bumped ā€œdownā€ to the Deans. Or even, I believe, to nothing (am I right, Alamemom?)

Soā€¦ while the early acceptances are indeed wonderful, they donā€™t guarantee a scholarship. The interview still has to happen.

AND there are also departmental scholarships that donā€™t go out until after acceptances. My son was fortunate to receive one from Thornton. It wasnā€™t huge, but it was something!

Smother,
Sometimes students have not thought of SC as their first choice. They attend Explore, take campus tours, learn more about faculty, compare financial aid, sit in on classes, see study abroad opportunities and student life at the university. In many cases they change their mind and choose SC.

California students often apply to eastern colleges and discover the weather and campus culture is so different they decide to remain closer to home.

SC is considered to be highly selective. Thousands of well qualified students received letters of regret last year.

I recall reading a post here with a LIST of National Merit Scholars who were not accepted. It is not a guarantee of acceptance.

After years on this board I do not recall any instance when a student interviewed and did not receive a scholarship. We only read about a small percentage of the hundreds who interview. Most receive the scholarship that was suggested on the invitation.

has anyone in LA (close to the LA area) received anything yet?

So these acceptances are really just to a select few at this point? I thought it was broader than that. The whole thing is confusing me the more I am on here! Sorry everyone, maybe I am slow on this stuff!

Georgia Girl, I was responding to Smotherā€™s statement that students accepted today were ā€œofferedā€ full Presidential scholarships - just clarifying that they have not YET been offered the scholarships. And that they often donā€™t get the exact scholarship specified in the letter. We know this from the bumped up/bumped down lists kept here from previous years.

But I donā€™t remember anyone not receiving any scholarship either!

As posted in another thread, I live less than 10 miles away from USC but didnā€™t receive anything. Does anyone think that this means Iā€™m not being considered?
