USC class of 2023 Applicants Thread

@denverapp Yes. You can put deposit( i think it’s $55) without accepting the offer. The USC Housing application will be open at 9am (PDT) on Wednesday, March 27th. You will receive an email by March 26th with your login information.

@200287791 There are a lot of reviews out there on the web but you have to take them with a grain of salt. Youtube has video tours of most of the dorms to give you a closeup.

GA resident denied. 3.98 UW, 4.3 W, and 34 ACT

@2023elite last year my Daughter was rejected from UCLA but accepted to USC so you never know what a given class is looking for to round out the group. That is why the holistic review is in place. Daughter doing great at USC and we didn’t tip nor receive any donations. ?

As for housing… I would go ahead and post a housing deposit… you cannot do so yet, but save this link:

https://housing.usc.edu/Portal/Default.aspx?Params=L9ezxPcQnQsKfjb/N3ih6r+T/UHqWA5N

The banner explains how and when you can do so. Even if you are not 100% certain about committing to USC, it is worth the $55 or so housing deposit to secure your spot in line. Its the best way to get preferential housing assignments. And you can even do so without paying the overall commitment deposit to enroll at USC.

The actual best way to get exactly what you want… or at least one of your top two choices… is to locate a roommate (CC or facebook, etc. is a good starting place) and then select each other and match your preferences (1-5, etc.) exactly the same. By doing so, you make the housing office’s job super-easy, as they can match you two and accommodate the goals of two freshmen simultaneously. They also go with whichever of you had the higher preferential order in terms of signing up.

Accepted yesterday and got the box! I was rather surprised since I don’t really have anything standing out on my profile. By that I mean I don’t have any overwhelmingly impressive awards besides maybe getting 36 on the ACT first time.

Applied to Dornsife for Psychology

Senior Class Load: 7 (technically 9) APs (thus the class rank jump lol): US/Comparative Govt, Bio, Lit, Spanish 4, Stats, Calc BC, Macro/Micro. Amounts to about 15-17 total APs taken throughout high school.

AP Scores: Four 5s, Two 4s.

GPA (UW/W): High 3.9/4.6

Tests: ACT 36 (36/35/36/35, 11 on essay), SAT 1540 (740/800, 21 on essay, Did not submit), SAT Math 2 800, SAT WH and LIT 690 (Did not submit)

ECs: Varsity Swim 4 years and summer swimming, accompanied by multitudes of awards/records/state ranked, but no recruitment from USC swim at all. Founded a club that did very little besides 4-5 short meetings throughout the school year. 2 years with NHS, senior year as a committee member finding community service events. No groundbreaking research, no national awards, no science/math competitions, debate team, gold key, scholastic whatevers! And of course, no $500k tip paid.

Essays: I thought they were okay. To be completely honest, I spent maybe a half hour on each of the prompts without much proofreading. Based a lot of my essay on a three minute Youtube video about their department and everything was rather generic, nothing that showed too much specific passion.

LORs: Both English teachers, they were fairly decent, 7/10.

Other Results: Rejected from Stanford REA and Pomona RD; accepted into UCI CHP, UCLA, & Carleton.

I got accepted to USC SCA for Cinema and Media Studies as a spring admit but I still am beyond shock because my GPA was 3.09 unweighted (3.63 weighted) and my ACT was 25 composite. For my essays, I was rushing until literally 30 seconds before the deadline.
My college counselor told me my chance of getting in was basically impossible and I was so close to not even applying. I believe it was my letters of rec and taking the IB program that might have helped but I honestly do not know how I got in.

You guys, miracles really do exist.

@DaniellaDay Congratulations! Aren’t you glad you believed in yourself and knew you were more than a number? USC obviously saw past that to what you have to offer.

How many students are accepted to the TTP in 2023?

Will any merit aid be shown along with financial aid early this week, or will it be communicated separately? Thanks.

I was rejected Saturday (3/23).

Major: Civil Engineering (Structural)
In-State
UNW GPA: around a 3.5
SAT: 1370
ACT: 30
Good ECs
Great essays

I was not expecting to be admitted but I decided to “shoot my shot” and applied to USC as a far reach school.

Acceptances: Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona, CSULB, LSU, SDSU, SJSU, University of Arizona, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside

Waitlists: UC Davis, UCSD

Rejections: Colorado School of Mines, Purdue, UCLA

Congratulations to everyone who got in!

I do believe some overlook or gloss over the USC specific questions on the Common App and do not realize how important they are when the USC folks are reviewing the application. The admissions crew reads a lot of applications and can smell camel fodder a mile away. If one gives cookie cutter or scripted answers rather then really getting personal and specific they will know as they read over 60,000 applications. They want people who want to live USC and not just attend and how much research and thought one gave USC is apparent in how you answer those questions.

Is there a thread for spring admits?

@JohnGaltIII i don’t think anyone could have said that better! that’s a really good answer

We dont have the white box yet. Just found out via portal that my DD got accepted last 3/23. We live in Oregon and our mail comes in around 2pm. .

I think a major factor in my acceptance despite my poor GPA was my demonstrated interest. USC is not as known on the East Coast, so be sure to write them an email expressing your interest and submit your mid-year transcript.

College admissions are insanely unpredictable though. I honestly think it is a game of chance. I’ve been rejected from UPenn ED, MIT, UCLA, and Georgia Tech. Good luck to everyone applying, though!

I definitely think USC is forgiving when it comes to GPA and does highly weight extracurriculars. Additionally, being a National Merit Finalist will significantly boost your chances. I got a score of 1510 on my PSAT and qualified, and now I am eligible for half tuition at USC. Note: If you want half tuition, you must declare USC as your top choice while filling out your NMSQT application in September/October.

@GodsPlan_OVO You are correct on showing interest (And I assume motivation.) Look at the world of sports and there are a lot of perfect athletic specimens that never amount to much… The same could be said of those with perfect numbers. If an athlete is not motivated to be in a certain place or is not motivated toward a certain goal his height, weight, bench press and 40 time become meaningless. Jamarcus Russell was 6’ 6" and 250 and could throw a ball on target 60 yards. How many folks would rather pick him than Drew Brees who looks more a bartender than NFL player out of uniform.
