is housing first come first serve regardless of whether or not you are officially enrolled? or do those who put down a deposit get priority? because i don’t even know if i am going to USC and i want to figure out if doing all this waiting around is even worth my time.
This is really annoying!!
Does it help if you have paid the deposit?
This is nuts to have everyone doing this now. Why cant they wait until deposits are due? I am supposed to be working right now. HELP!
has anyone called housing to ask about this?
@rickarinate They probably do it this way to get the $55 from everyone, right?
Well, that was frustrating, but I did finally get in after trying for about 45 minutes. Whew!
It’s been an hour and I must have the worst luck!
@lkbux64 Any tricks or suggestions to getting in?
It’s always like this, but remember there are a lot of spots, the ones that have to get in early are people requesting singles, because there are so few of those. For the rest, anytime the first couple days is fine. Lots don’t register until after they commit. But I get the panic.
I remember last year the website didn’t handle things well. My daughter’s timestamp ended up being right when she got in. most people don’t know about signing up right away. Being in the first hour, people will very likely get their first choice.
Someone asked about Deans scholarship and McCarthy. You are technically eligible to put McCarthy down, but it is not guaranteed. The higher scholarships get priority, so it’s not just timestamp. I would recommend Deans be sure they have other options.
@collegemom111111 - no tricks or suggestions. Just refresh, refresh, refresh. . .
Thanks @CADREAMIN and @TreeAlum for making us feel better. I’m still not in. I guess I won’t be one of the lucky ones in the 1st hour. Ugh! I can’t help be thinking in my frustration that they should have better IT infrastructural than this.
Still trying
Are you guys refreshing the page that says there is an increased load? or are you returning to the log in page every time?
@200115, return to log in page.
@200115 returning to log in page every time
Return to login… even that is slow.
Regarding housing… the actual best way to get exactly what you want… or at least one of your top two choices… is to locate a roommate (CC or facebook, etc. is a good starting place) and then select each other and match your preferences (1-5, etc.) exactly the same. By doing so, you make the housing office’s job super-easy, as they can match you two and accommodate the goals of two freshmen simultaneously. They also go with whichever of you had the higher preferential order in terms of signing up.
Another way to get exactly what you want… if their set-up matches your goal… is to apply to be in a special interest housing community. If your requested roommate does exactly the same, your chances are even better.

@sonsav It’s weird how sometimes it takes forever to load the page, and other times it’s super quick. Is that happening to you too?
