It’s ok they don’t ask. Just for class credit in some cases which can be helpful (and worth a lot of money/credits) so make sure you know what you are bailing on. Keep your grades in corresponding classes up though.
In the subject of AP exams, my son is looking to do a double major with music and an academic subject and has 20 units under his belt with the possibility of earning another 12 units on his last 3 AP exams. We had assumed that double majoring with Thornton and Dornsife would be a 5 year undertaking. I wonder if with these credits in the bank he can do it in 4-1/2. Any insight on this would be appreciated as it does change the financial calculation for the better if he can get out a semester early.
@lkbux64 I don’t know about Thornton bc my D will be SCA. Her major has major requirements in addition to USC’s general ed requirements in the 6 core and 2 global areas. After reviewing them, I reached out to the major’s asst director to inquire about how her AP’s can be used to knock out some of the core requirements. My D may consider adding a minor so we want to be sure that she can free up space as much as possible. She replied back very quickly and arranged a call with my D and me to answer our questions. The call was very helpful and I was very impressed how quickly she responded. All the major requirements are on USC’s website; take a look at it, it takes a bit of digging. I’m sure your son’s APs will be helpful in meeting some of the requirements. Good luck.

sorry if this has been asked before—Is it an advantage to go to an earlier orientation session? Does it help with class selection to be in an early session or does it not matter much? My son will be an English Major in the Dornsife school.
@zeropointzero It does not matter, as they set aside GEs and the courses most commonly taken by freshmen for each session.
Hey guys! Does anyone know if/when dean’s scholarships come out?
All scholarships have been offered.
Hijacking this thread to say I’m officially committed! This is the best thing to ever happen to me, and I’m beyond grateful for the generosity of USC in offering me a huge scholarship and making private school affordable for my family. So proud to represent and FIGHT ON!!
^^^Good hijack. Welcome to the Trojan Family!
We finally got our FA summary after some calling. It is quite a shock to see Estimated Cost of Attendance of ~80K. Less the Presidential Scholarship and grant, we are still looking at 46K to attend USC. With a choice attending UCLA for 37K or USC for 46K, S picks USC. I support his decision. I think he will have a better college experience as a Trojan. Does anyone think I am drinking the cool aid here?
Not at all. Many have made that exact choice even with out aid, paying a much bigger difference. No regrets. Not for a second. Your student could take Stafford loans to narrow that gap and have skin in the game. You can choose to pay them at some point or tell him if he wants USC that part is his. I think it’s around 20k total (about 5k a year) they can borrow themselves. Just a thought.
I have an unusual housing-related issue… My son is a freshman in the SCA, and is friendly, hardworking, and will be a great roommate for someone. We do have one limiting factor though: his religious beliefs (LDS/Mormon) preclude having guests of opposite sex in the room overnight. If he had gone to BYU that wouldn’t have been an issue (since that’s one of the rules there), but USC is a better match for his career goals (game design and/or animation).
How would I go about finding him a roommate with similar goals? I suggested he mention it in his profile, but he’s embarrassed to say anything about it publicly, since he’s otherwise really “normal” and doesn’t want to make his religion a big deal. Other than wanting to remain a virgin till marriage (and ideally rooming with someone with a similar goal), he’s a really normal guy. How would we go about finding an appropriate roommate for him without having him come off as “weird”?
- He would ideally like to be in a location with a microwave and at least a mini-fridge + doesn't require the full meal plan (for cost reasons).
My son is in a similar housing situation, but to further complicate things he’ll be a Spring admit. He’s trying to connect with like minded Christians via student org social media groups (since he’s not on campus). Something you may want to consider.
However, as a Spring admit, it’ll likely be a “you get whatever you get” housing assignment - which he’s handled well before.
@idesign123 They all have microwave and fridge in the room. Technically they can’t have anyone else in the room overnight without permission of room mate, so that is something he just has to be adamant about. I would think adding Mormon to his profile (if place to do so, I don’t recall) would be an indicator of preferences without him having to call out certain things. There are certainly choices in the profile that indicate a desire to be more conservative. He really has to “speak up” in the profile. Have you gone through it yet? If you check things like don’t party, go to bed early, study in the room most of time, what’s mine is mine, etc., you will tend to get people that don’t have guests in their room. I don’t think this will be a huge problem. While some do, a lot of people wouldn’t consider having an overnight guest in a dorm room. But to ensure it he has to say it somewhere and sometime. Btw the housing office are super nice people usually if you want to ask them if there is place to specify this.
Thanks for the suggestions!
CADREAMIN - I’ll encourage him to include his preference for no overnight guests in his profile (I’m sure there’s a way to do it without coming off as “weird”
ROMNS116 (or anyone else) - Do you have the URL for the Christian social media group? He doesn’t personally care whether his roommate is christian or not (just no girlfriends in the room overnight). But this might be a good place to look. I also thought I heard something about a housing-related Facebook Page? Thanks for any leads on where to look in addition to the Housing Portal!
^^^ Maybe look around here for social media connections for these groups…
Is there any advantage to enroll before May 1st? Do students usually wait till May 1st to enroll? If you are a scholarship recipient is it needed to send thank you note to the admission office even though the final decision to enroll is not yet made?
Do you know why Spring admits decision thread is closed?
Maybe you were looking at old one? This is open…
