Dear Son and Dear Daughter. It’s the weirdest notation (sounds like 1950) but used all the time on here. For years I though it was something like dad’s son or other random things I put together. You can think of it as da son and da daughter. ?
Spring to fall move totally major dependent, more than school. They tell students not to contact them about it, if it happens it happens.
Has anyone ever seen a TTP moved to a Spring Admit when Spring Admits are moved to the fall?
Never. Sorry, won’t happen. I see the logic, but no. Every year we do see a few spring admits get bumped up to fall. It’s weird they let kids know a couple days after May 1 instead of a couple days before. So I assume those getting bumped up are only kids that committed to USC spring enrollment. I suppose one could double book on May 1st to hedge that bet. Not that they should, but I know people that have done that under normal circumstances.
@CADREAMIN - Thanks for the reply! I was curious if it ever happened.
@Momof2boys1 Did yours commit to another 4 year? Or doing cc? Considering TTP or set on it?
@CADREAMIN Committed to a 4 year college. Would not consider a cc but may consider keeping TTP in back pocket.
@Momof2boys1 Yay! I think back pocket is only way to go - go all in for the four year and do not let USC be a distraction in any way. Take the courses he needs and wants to take for the school he is attending. GPA is what matters for TTP, so unless a student believes with all their heart that USC is the only school they want to graduate from one day, they shouldn’t do a thing to keep someone that rejected them happy. I obviously have a love hate thing with the TTP process. It is great for some, and a huge distraction for others.
Has anyone who didn’t commit to USC received a new student orientation letter?
@pdxtigermom hi there! Where is your son going?
@CADREAMIN after 2 rounds of application processes and was admitted with a large amount of merit scholarships from USC, he’s committed to University of Washington as a Direct Admit to Computer Science major and Violin Performance major. Even though USC and Thornton are very supportive of his dual-degree pursuit, he still feels UW is a better fit.
@pdxtigermom Wow that is fantastic! Whew, you deserve a break from this stuff, it’s been a long haul. Glad he can settle into such a lovely school. I think you are from up that way too right? Ya the direct admit is key to UW - congrats on that! My D visited a friend this weekend up in Seattle - looked like a gorgeous weekend there! I have nephews up there, all three UW grads. Super happy for you all!
@CADREAMIN we are from Oregon and he is one of the few OOS students who got Direct Admit to CS major. He just wouldn’t give up the opportunity no matter how much scholarships he got from other schools.
@pdxtigermom We had that same decision for my CS major who got direct admit as well, and all my kids at least looked at UW, I have toured UW 4 times! I know that campus really well even though none ever attended, lol. Love the Marriott at Lake Union btw. Best of luck to him there, glad he is able to continue his music.
@CADREAMIN I just wish USC would allow my son to apply CS and music at the same time. If he were accepted to both CS and music at USC, then he’d definitely commit. He could only be accepted to one major sadly. Even though both Thornton and Viterbi are very supportive, he’s still considered pre-sciences and have to take CS prerequisites.
@pdxtigermom I didn’t know you could be accepted and enrolled in two majors when first entering a college, I thought you had to apply for other one once in, so that is new to me, glad he has that opportunity at UW. Yes, at USC I’m sure he would have got into CS after taking the math and intro courses they want to be able to declare/add as another major, but it sounds much more settled and certain at UW. Main thing is he gets to do both things he wants to do! Seattle is a wonderful city in which to spend your college years And I believe you already have one there too, right? So you will be the UW pro!
@CADREAMIN I guess part of the reasons that UW allows dual-degree path is that the music school is relatively small. Most of the music students there are double major or dual degree students with some just minoring in music or taking private lessons. UW is not famous for their music program to be honest. You don’t need to put music as your 1st choice major and only need to sign up for an audition if you want to major, minor or take private lessons. Thornton is a top ranked music program and Viterbi is also a very strong and competitive school to get into. If he put CS as his first choice and got admitted, then he would have to audition to get into Thornton for next school year. He would have no music his freshman year at USC. The good news is his violin professor at UW is a Thornton graduate!
You are very right about the settled and certain part of the CS Direct Admit. He cares more about CS than music I guess. We bought a condo near UW campus so he and his sister (a biology and violin performance dual degree student at UW) could live. There are plenty of intern and job opportunities in Seattle and he doesn’t need to worry about housing in the long run and it’s only 3 hours drive from home to Seattle.
@pdxtigermom I am so happy for you! That sounds more than ideal for everyone! Thanks for sharing - I love hearing the different ways college works out for everyone. I remember when this all started for you with his journey - what a great mom you are, I know how much you and your amazing kids put into this and glad to see you have an outstanding result in such a great school and city. It will be a wonderful four years!
@CADREAMIN you and @WWWard are the two most amazing parents on this thread! I remember last year in the midnight during portal update, you were awake and stayed with us anxious parents and students. You two are so selfless, supportive and compassionate!
@pdxtigermom - i have been lurking on this post since my son was accepted to USC. He did receive the new student orientation in the mail yesterday even though he did NOT commit to USC. USC as other posters have noted is a well-oiled machine of a college. They really time their mailings impeccably ( in a good/amazing way). Thank you @CADREAMIN and @WWWard for the objective and supportive info you have provided all the students and parents on the forum. Because of Explore weekend, all the mailings and old-fashioned "OMG you got in!"white package USC gave us so many thrills and chills and excitement. It made the decision not to attend oh SO difficult. We are out of state in Maryland. He was accepted to University of Maryland College Park Honors College. Unfortunately, the price difference would have been over 200K and Maryland is the more logical and practical choice. We have to look forward and embrace his bright future! Thank you trojans, FIGHT ON!
