I know this topic is a little different from recent conversation but I just received notice that my appeal to USC was successful! I was hoping to ask for advice. They would be willing to admit me for Spring 2020. Does anyone know of anyone who previously went through something like this and what their situation was like? I am very conflicted because I am quite happy with this result, however not being admitted for the fall is something I am not certain of and currently I’m planning to attend Univeristy of Michigan with a large scholarship I am not sure USC would be able to match.
@kimtaehyung USC would not match a scholarship. Scholarship funds are unlikely, pretty close to zero possibility, the only thing in play would be financial aid, not merit money. Good luck - UM is a great school too - just decide where you want to go after seeing how the financials line up and the fall v. spring consideration.
I was just notified that my decision was successfully overturned and I couldn’t be happier! Class of 2023, fight on!
Hi. My daughter is in the exact same position with USC and MI, no money involved except for difference in cost. We are very conflicted. Maybe you guys should talk!
Congrats! Jake! Are you second semester as well? Can I ask where y have committed to? We are MI both of which are great. Just kind of shocked
Help!! Just found out daughter was accepted from appeal from Spring. She has committed to U MI. Did not get into Ross but is in Marshall (we think it says Business Admin). Going to try to start sorting things out but today is Commencement so dont know how much info we can gather
Don’t even know where to start evaluating. Really did not put much time into USC
USC was her “dream school”. Really wanted the weather and wants to study business and fashion.
Was happy with MI except for weather but resigned to it.
Just don’t know if its worth it. Mi is so good as well 'Public Ivy" We live on East coast so trips home more expensive, more frequent.
Tuition 10K difference but we will pay if thats what she really wants
Any thoughts would be helpful
Thanks
I just got my rejection letter overturned too! I’m also going to Marshall Business School for Business Administration. I’m so exited!
@DeRb61, my son is starting USC in the Fall and also made his final school selection between USC and U Michigan (and WashU). We are from the East coast as well (NY). While Michigan is certainly closer to the East Coast than Los Angeles, I have to say that the frequency and competitive pricing for the NY - LAX route is pretty attractive. Many more options than flying between NY and Detroit so flying the further distance to LA may not be as bad as you may think.
I have a big question to ask myself ASAP - is USC declining? Need to decide by tonight
I am just having a real worry its reputation is declining: with all the situations on right now
- college admissions scandal
- the sexual assaults
- the recent lack of funding in the school of social work and the investigation by the Los Angeles Times
- interim president for so long and when will this change
How will it be seen in 2/5/10 yrs from now?
Is the acceptance rate just increasing from now on?
Please let me know what you think cause this place has been my dream but I’m not sure about its reputation in the future… and I have to decide USC or somewhere else by tonight
@smahrf - I am a parent of an incoming freshman. I had some concerns about the college admissions scandal when it first broke but after a lot of thoughtful consideration I came to the conclusion that (a) it was just a few bad actors and (b) by the time the Class of 2023 graduates the scandal will hopefully be a distant memory. As to the president, that has changed already with a new president starting on July 1st: https://news.usc.edu/155328/carol-l-folt-to-become-uscs-12th-president/. I cannot speak to the specifics of the other concerns that you raise.
@smahrf I personally see no prospect for decline and only expect the record # of applications to continue to rise… resulting in a continual declining affect on the admission rate. I sent both of my daughters there and have one still there and now 1/2 way through her time at USC. We have no regrets. And none of the issues that you referenced have had any affect on them. Only #1, the recent college admission scandal, was really ever discussed, but mainly due to the amusement of it from the perspective of past and current students. They took it more as a compliment than anything else… as in look how much those silly parents paid to try and get their ill-qualified kids in to USC while we did it solely on our merit. I post a lot on CC and most of those posts have been on the USC thread, as I am clearly a thankful and supportive parent. But the decision really needs to be yours alone. Think about the overall college experience for a four year period at each destination and the global strength of the various alumni networks for the schools that you are comparing. And maybe compare each school via the rankings and surveys at Niche. We found those to offer excellent info.
Good luck with your decision…
Hey, so I’m a spring admit and I was wondering if there was still a chance for me to become a fall admit? I know that a bunch of people were moved up to fall and that appeals were overturned for some to join the fall class as well, so is there just no chance for me to start I’m the fall?
It can still happen, it’s fluid for awhile.
@lkbux64 Thanks for your response. I know the prices from Boston to LA are insanely cheap…but 5-6 hours vs 1-1.25 hour is real. There are tons of flight bet here and Detroit. I’m not expecting her to have a tough time transiting as she has been going to sleep away camp for many years but the Spring admit things does make me a little worried if she is having a hard time. Some kids live in the apts across from USC and go to CC…just not sure how great an option that is. Its her decision. Should be an interesting week.
@kimtaehyung how are you doing w your decsion. My daughter is in the same boat but without the money from MI>
@smahrf
Every school has problems, the key is that they fix them promptly. I think USC did that for the most part. Aside from keeping Nikias too long (which the assaults happened under his watch but they forced him and others out), they have moved quickly to amend other issues. The new president was brought in awhile ago (you did not know this?) and she seems amazing on the surface (hasn’t been there long enough to really tell). USC wasn’t alone on the admissions scandal and let’s face it, they are getting more press because of who they are and the Hollywood types involved. There were 12+ schools and 48 other families doing the same kind of thing. Frankly, the fact that Olivia Jade could be on the yacht of one of the largest donors to USC, yet couldn’t buy her way in through him, and had to use some sleezeball through a side door, says many good things about how tight admissions actually is. USC was screwed by one of their own (the Asst Athletic Director), but I am sure they have already tightened things up going forward.
I would just be careful that you don’t let today’s headlines or social media tirades influence you too heavily. They will fade in a very short time, while you are looking at your next four years and where you want to attend school and graduate from.
The challenge your generation has with all the “exaggerated” digital headlines and stories found online is deciphering what is actually real, true, and to what degree it matters overall, then importantly whether it is actually relevant to you. Frankly, a lot of stuff out there should be mentally discarded.
USC will remain a strong and elite university. Just go where you your heart wants to go.
@CADREAMIN @WWWard I chose SC! FIGHT ON!
