USC class of 2023 Applicants Thread

@Safalm2019 Have you received your admissions packet?

@TuckerTroy - no housing assignment yet. My son called yesterday and was told the assignments would come out early next week.

Thank you so much! Really appreciate your help!

@WWWard @CADREAMIN thank you both so very much!! Great info as usual

Some of the spring admits did moved up to Fall, my D is one of them, so is a son of my friend. May be all the spots for Fall is full now.

@futurestudent66 Congrats on your decision. As suggested above
I would actually wait until you can review the syllabuses for each of your courses – once you fully register. It will detail your exam schedules. Some are able to leave rather early in the process, while some have an exam scheduled last. You will not really know until you look at each syllabus.

@dorothyday You’re welcome.

@tbyrxx I just got my USC packet today

We received housing (dorm) assignment via email today. No roommate information is given until contract is signed and $800 deposit is paid.

If you go on the application and go on the rooms tab you can see your assigned roommates. @MadisonWI

@CelestialDreams Thanks for the info! You are right!

Any advice on meal plans and renter insurance? My daughter will be staying in Birnkrant.
Thank you!

hi @sonsav . Congrats on Birnkrant - such a great place to live! We always did the Gold plan with the $500 bucks that you get for $300. She def used the dining dollars around campus, so that made it worth it over the Cardinal. For insurance, we did it last year while she was in dorms, and will do it going forward. Besides the pricey laptop, she had other nice things with her that made it make sense. We used a policy attached to our homeowners and we pay like $120 bucks a year or some super low amount for 15K coverage. We preferred that because it not only covered her in the dorm and anywhere on campus, but also in LA overall so if something was taken from her car it was covered. The laptop alone made it totally worth it but it covers her other stuff too. They also sell one through USC, that may be fine and a little cheaper, we just felt comfortable working with ours.

I was def more concerned about something disappearing cause it was left out on a table or in the car, or places outside the dorm, we haven’t heard of issues of theft in the dorms. Kids said same thing. Of course it could happen, but I don’t think it is a big issue at USC in the dorms. One of the desk drawers has loops on the drawer where you can put a lock through it. Good size drawer.

Speaking of lock above, that is something I don’t think is on the list but you should bring with you. Standard size holes for a lock, I would get one with numbers to line up rather than a key they would lose.

@sonsav, my son will be in McCarthy and we purchased the renters insurance through USC. it hadn’t occurred to me to do it until it popped up on the USC housing page, but it made sense in light of my son’s laptop, guitars amplifier, pedals etc.

We filled housing options within a week when they opened booking for housing. We didnt get any of our choice. We at least expected his 2nd or 3rd choice. Marks tower it is now.

@friend1976 Marks Tower is great, but what were your building choices?

@CADREAMIN IRC was our 1st choice due to AC, closeness to viterbi and nearest dining hall is more suited due to international cuisine. Fluor was 2nd choice.

For those thinking about renter’s insurance, it’s worth it to call your insurance agent/company about your homeowner’s policy to see what’s covered through that. As long as my kids were in a dorm room, they were covered under our homeowners policy. We did a separate personal line policy, which was really reasonable, to cover musical instruments and laptops (which covered mysterious disappearances), so those were covered without paying our rather large deductible.

@friend1976 Totally surprised you didn’t get IRC, that is not one on a lot of people’s radar. It is a lot of international and older students with family. Your student will have more opportunity to meet people in Marks Tower and as a first year, they take classes all over campus so the distanceto Viterbi won’t be an issue. But I get the preference for AC and the dining - I do think kids travel all over campus for food because they tire of the same hall pretty quickly.
