USC class of 2023 Applicants Thread

Hope many of you are enjoying the bittersweetness of move-in day!

On a different note: does anyone know when the c/o 2023 freshman profile is released?

@romns116 Last year, it was posted on September 10thā€¦ so likely soon.

USC News released an article on the class of 2023 profile.

What is the best housing for sophomores? Any advice is appreciated!

@MadisonWI It really just depends on your preferences and the building amenities as listed at https://housing.usc.edu/.

My older daughter chose Century for both her sophomore and junior years and then a private apartment for her senior year. She chose Century because the units are large, have a private bathroom & lots of storage and mainly because they are fully air-conditioned throughout. Most USC Housing apartments, even those with A/C, are not so throughout the units. Century also has a pool. My younger daughter chose her sorority house for years 2-4.

Luckily, you have many optionsā€¦ but it will come down to your lottery time slot or the best among prospective roommates. The person with the earliest time slot can pull everyone else in and secure the best option available.

@MadisonWI Lots of sophomores want the Village these days, but others are ready to get out of the rules/restrictions of a dorm and are ready to go off campus. If yours wants the Village, be sure someone with earliest lottery number has everyone else lined up and knows exactly what they want. Also be prepared, even if someone has an early lottery spot , they may not get exactly what they want - my Dā€™s friend had virutally one of the first appointments, but somehow the configuration they wanted wasnā€™t available (and there was supposed to be a lot of them, it wasnā€™t an odd one). Itā€™s like getting concert tickets - ya get through, but then find out all you can access is the seats in the back and the best seats were already booked in some back door wayā€¦so have plan A and Plan B if you want a certain type of room in the Village! It has to work out for someā€¦also if you want other than Village, those arenā€™t nearly as hard to get.

Many times, people with larger friend groups end up moving off campus because it can prove difficult - and by the time you know on campus housing, the off campus best choices are filling (ed). So they bail on the on campus housing altogether.

@MadisonWI Just wanted to chime in on what @WWWard and @CADREAMIN are saying above. My daughter is a sophomore in Century this year, and she loves it: lots of storage space, AC, very spacious esp. the kitchen, close proximity to friends in Cardinal Gardens, newer furniture, and a pool, which is really nice in the warmer months. She and her friends tried to get into the Village. No one had an early lottery spot, so it didnā€™t work out. But, sheā€™s very happy where she is. Good luck.

My son just told me that honors students in McCarthy as freshmen get priority for space in Illium in the Village as sophomores. Does anyone have any insight into how easy or difficult for current McCarthy students to get into for sophomore year?

@lkbux64 It just depends on whatever housing lottery ranking your sonā€“or someone in his group ā€“ gets. My daughter applied for Illium last year (from McCarthy) but did not get in. Just make sure he has a backup plan.

@lkbux64 it also depends on who they want to live with. My D was in McCarthy but wanted to live with friends not eligible for Illium. They wanted the Village but all four had bad lottery numbers. Theyā€™re in CarGar and are very happy!

Thanks for the info on Illium, @Marcie123 and @Isoinfo!

Now I have a non-housing question. My son is at Thornton and is planning to pursue a dual degree in Dornsife. He has registered for 20 units for next semester. He is in two ensembles, one of which he needs for his degree and the other he does not. The ensembles are offered Credit/No Credit. Does anyone know if itā€™s possible to be in an ensemble but opt not to get credit and therefore not pay the per unit cost for going above 18?

@lkbux64 Iā€™m not sure but have the same question as well. My daughter also is registered for 20 units next semester. She signed up for 2 two credit classes for fun. She has a major and two minors but is enjoying using the two credit units on dance classes. Next semester she also signed up for an improv class.

We have that coming too. DD also applied to USC. Number one choice. Says itā€™s coming Monday. How will I keep from going crazy between now and then. I canā€™t tell her. We live in Illinois. Iā€™d say thatā€™s a pretty big coincidence. Good luck today

Sorry this is in response to @carshoes227

I just responded up above. Itā€™s coming to us in Illinois too. Big coincidence?

USC does not offer early admission , and students who applied before the Dec 1 scholarship deadline and are chosen to interview for 1/2 to full tuition scholarships arenā€™t notified of that decision until the end of Jan , though that could have changed. Good luck to all.

Wishful thinking. Something USC related but for my husband. He went there. Also I did not realize this was from last spring. Back to waiting!

@CADREAMIN Housing portals open this morning and DD is having a time trying to figure out how to list her preferences. Does anyone have a map of housing and where theyā€™re located on campus? Thx!

@VivienL
