My son from OOS was waitlisted and likely is moving on to another school as I think even if he gets in off waitlist he is unlikely to get any merit aid.
Those waitlist stats that MAC 001 linked to can’t be right as they state the following:
Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list: 562
Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 0
Number of wait-listed students admitted: 1
Impossible that “0” accepted a spot on waitlist yet “1” was admitted!
Wish there was somewhere to get the stats. Was able to find other schools waitlist stats on line.
@Badgersmom I’m shocked at those stats. This has been so painful. I have to say again how helpful this group has been during this process. Because I know we all like to collect this data and evaluate - here’s our recap:
My son received the big gateway envelope yesterday. His portal changed to a gateway welcome on Friday. The envelope looks just like the big USC yes envelope except instead of a gamecock on the back, it’s a gate. He applied EA in September, was deferred in January (a part of that December 10 debacle). He had a strong essay, no extracurriculars but a stellar work experiencer to talk about and some volunteer hours. He made a point to talk about what he did in his spare time so that he didn’t look like he was just sitting around. He had great grades in 9th and 10th grade, terrible grades in 11th grade (3 D’s!!) for a gpa of 3.0. SAT score was 1100. An average student based on scores, without a doubt. I think his essay squeaked him into the residential gateway program, but he had hoped in applying EA he’d get straight in.
My takeaway for this for all the next years applicants reading through this to decide how to apply is that EA is ONLY for those with stellar scores, it looks to me like USC runs the applicants through for GPA and SAT/ACT scores that are above a certain benchmark. If yours aren’t strong - well above average strong, wait until RD and get your S1 grades up so you can apply with a higher GPA. If my son had done that, he would’ve likely gotten in because he had a 4.0 for S1 but they don’t look at S1 when re-evaluating.
Waitlisted here too. My daughter’s Stats were not too high, so I was expecting a rejection. But we have moved on also to Univ of Delaware. She was accepted to 7/8 schools so far. The 8th being SC
My son was also wait listed. With his stats (6th in class, 4.49 GPA, several AP and DE courses and EC’s) we didn’t expect this but his 1170 SAT score evidently hurt his chances more than expected. South Carolina seems like they don’t look much beyond the numbers and we’re moving on to his other options. Glad USC wasn’t his #1.
@abch2023 my daughter applied for business and was accepted to:
Charleston
Univ of South Florida
Coastal Carolina - Merit Scholarship
West Chester
Univ of Del
UNCW
South Carolina- Waitlist
Penn State- Altoona, changed major to undec still waiting for main campus
Those of you that were waitlisted, did you put on your personal statement that you would be open to the Gamecock Gateway program? We did and go in Gateway. All same perks as a normal USC student just take classes the first year by shuttle to Midlands tech. Im wondering if we got Gateway because we expressed interest??
@LMayPA my son applied business as well and looks like we have a couple of the same schools on our list, He was accepted to the following:
LaSalle (merit & legacy scholarship)
Coast Carolina (merit scholarship as well)
West Chester
University of Tampa (merit scholarship)
Penn State - Altoona (merit scholarship, but wants no part of Altoona)
He is on hold @ Temple and unfortunately did not get into USC.
This board has been wonderful during this process…good luck to your daughter on wherever she chooses to go!!
The 2017-18 CDS contains this information:
Number offered a place on the waiting list: 5097
Number who accepted a place on the waiting list: 2339
Number of wait-listed students accepted: 35
So essentially that year at least, the wait listed acceptance rate was about 1.5 percent.
@Sue22, where were you able to locate that information? On the USC website from the CDS 2018/2018 that they’ve posted, they have:
Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list 562
Number accepting a place on the waiting list 0
Number of wait-listed students admitted 1
Which seems odd. The note on their website says 2018/2019 info coming soon. What other sources are available? Thanks!
Son was under second review and received a YES envelope on Tuesday. Was admitted to USC to his second major choice. First was business, letter said that it was full and he was admitted to Undecided in Arts and Sciences. He will likely go to PSU (Undecided University Park) over USC. But we will wait for VTech tomorrow to finalize.
@loulou2 did you hear from VT? Our older son is there. Loves it. Pamplin College of Business is really good. VT parents are an incredibly helpful group of people!
@golfmom2023 Thank you so much for asking! He did hear from VT and was accepted to the Pamplin College! He has decided to be Hokie after all! It’s so great to hear that your son is happy and Pamplin is good - we know PSU well as our daughter is there so this is new but all positive! He is super excited for VT and we feel it’s the right choice for him as well. Thanks again!
@loulou2, if you haven’t already, join the VT Parents Facebook page. It’s the most incredible group ever! Super helpful and will rally around you! No question too big or too small for that group and if you need anything, they are on top of it! Go Hokies!
