USC(computer science) or UCSD(mathematics-computerscience)

UCSD has a higher ranking in computer science than USC, but SD gave me mathematics-computersicence while USC offered me Computer science major.

Is it true that Mathematics-Computer science is inferior to ComputerScience in UCSD?
Would it be easy to change my major from math-computerscience to just ComputerScience in UCSD?
Is the campus safer in UCSD than in USC?
Which has the better CS program, UCSD or USC?

Thanks! =)

ARWU lists USC slightly higher than UCSD for CS, but I wouldn’t worry about rankings. Both schools are very good for CS, and hiring managers aren’t going to be making a distinction between the schools based on rankings.

You won’t have a problem getting a job with a Math-CS degree. In fact, if I was to do it all over again, I’d go for something like a computational math degree rather than the vanilla CS degree I have now.

The dangers of the USC campus are highly over-exaggerated. The USC campus itself is very safe. It’s when you go a few blocks west and south that the neighborhoods start degenerating and you see houses with bars over the windows. Even in those areas the odds of anything bad happening are very low.

Math-CS is not inferior to CS, and no one at UCSD perceives it that way. The UCSD Math department explains it well here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/18292151/#Comment_18292151

It wouldn’t be easy to change your major to CS. You can try to transfer in at the end of each quarter. Admission is based solely on GPA in four courses: CSE 8B or 11, CSE 12, CSE 15L, and CSE 20 or Math 15A. The odds of getting in vary from quarter to quarter; it’s difficult, but not impossible.

UCSD is known to have an extremely safe campus and is located in an affluent community. While I wouldn’t say USC’s campus is unsafe, UCSD’s is way safer.

Both campuses will give you great recruitment, research, and internship opportunities. I’d try to visit and see which school you like better.

unless you are comparing to Cal…in the case of UCSD VS USC…UCSD >>> USC in this case, period. program is the same (for the most part from a recruiter’s perspective), overall engineering is better, if you decided to switch to different engineering major. much better surrounding, much cheaper tuition. go with a heartbeat!
