USC (Computer Science) vs UCI (Computer Science and Engineering)

Hi! I’m a sophomore transfer student currently enrolled at… both UCI and USC. I was admitted to USC in July and I haven’t dropped from UCI for the reason I made this post.

Is a degree in Computer Science from USC worth the $180k in debt that I would accrue over m remaining 2 (3 counting this year) here? I come from a well-off family, however we aren’t in the best financial situation right now and I’m not expecting my parents to help me out AT ALL. Comparatively, if I went to UCI I would end up with a- still painful- $84k in debt. In both of these situations I’ll be living at home and commuting to campus.

ANY input would be awesome because I don’t really have much time to decide.

You personally cannot take on that much debt and would not qualify that amount of loans. Neither is an affordable option. Also if you are caught having SIR’d to two schools you will be rescinded from both and this discussion is moot. Can you stay another year at your CC and reapply with more affordable options? Take a gap year and reapply. Do your parents have any savings for college? Do you?

There is no reason to take on 100K more debt for a CS degree. UCI may still be unaffordable but for CS, 84K in debt is not a hole you can’t get out of. You would still require parent plus loans which you should make sure you understand fully before using.

@Gumbymom I transferred from UC Irvine and I’m a 2nd year student. It’s ok that I haven’t dropped from Irvine.

Thank you for the clarification and wish you the best on your decision. Either way it still is a lot of debt to take on…
