I would really love to go to the university of south Carolina, but could only afford it with a merit scholarship, preferably the Cooper. On the website it says that no application is required, so I was wondering how they give those out? Has anyone been offered it without having to apply for the honors college or indicate that they want it?

For scholarships at the Cooper level and below, everyone who applies by the deadline is considered. That’s why no separate application is required - your application to the school is sufficient.

You have to apply early, though, so pay attention to the deadlines.

If you have the stats for a Cooper, you might consider applying for the Honors College, which can bring even bigger scholarships.

I think these are basically given out by scores/gpa. Call admissions for specific questions so that you don’t go wrong. Honors app is very long, but worth it if you think it’s right for you.

Thank you! do you know how often they are offered?

The web site says they give out “more than 1,000 need-based and merit-based scholarships to entering freshmen”, but doesn’t provide a breakdown between IS and OOS, or how many of each scholarship.

However, based on the stats provided (75th percentile SAT is 1270), the size of the freshman class (around 4800?, 25% of which is 1200), the stats listed for the scholarships, and the number of scholarships given out, it seems like a reasonable assumption that you have a pretty good chance.

In fact, from looking over SC’s Common Data Set, it looks like 3536 out of 4361 freshman students were awarded non-need-based scholarships and/or grants in 2011, or about 81%.

My S got the McKissick scholarship (merit for oos students) and a Capstone scholarship. It’s been awhile (2005) but I remember he was accepted to USC in the Fall of sr. year (rolling admission) and was notified of the scholarship offer around March. There was no separate application.
