I was curious to here past experiences about the fall retreats for the USC engineering honor students. It seems like a fun idea. All and any thoughts/experiences are welcome!

Oh and if space is limited, how do you sign up/ apply for the retreat? I couldn't find anything online :(

Just for future reference… I called the number on the engineering honors website and they told me that an email will explain the retreat in greater detail; the email will also provide links to sign up for the trip!

Past experiences of the trip are still welcome!! :D

I went on the trip last year as an entering freshman and had a really great time. It was an opportunity to meet people in my situation as well as older students. Even though USC is extremely large and there are more people than you could ever hope to meet, you end up seeing the same people in different places due to shared interests, classes, etc. Getting to know some people right away is really nice and helps ease the transition in Viterbi and USC on the whole.

The one downside to the trip is its scheduling; you end up missing your first weekend, which, as the end of Welcome Week, has a concert or something. It’s definitely worth it, though.

I’d say that the largest group was freshman and the smallest was seniors, with a few dropping off for every year. That sort of works out well, since you get to know more people from your own year than from the other years, and the older kids who are there are the more committed and dedicated ones.

I was only a freshman last year, so I’ve only been on one trip so far. There were definitely people who went on the trip multiple times, though. I’ll probably go again this yearaccording to the web site, it’s going to be on Catalina, which is a really nice place. USC has a campus there that I got to visit on last spring’s ATPS (Associated Trustee and Presidential Scholars) retreat.

By the way, make sure you register for the colloquium during your first semester if you can. I had a conflict during my second semester and I have another one this coming semester, and it’s best to get the colloquium sessions out of the way as soon as possible. Once you’ve finished the four of them, you won’t have to worry about remaining eligible by keeping a 3.6.

I went on the Honors retreat two years ago, I had to miss last year because of a scheduling conflict. It is definitely worth it, much more so than the welcome week activities. Those are fine, but the people you’ll meet and hang out with during the retreat are going to be some of your best friends for four or more years.

I do have to admit that it being on Catalina is a bit of a bummer. Catalina is great and all, don’t get me wrong, but recently it’s been seeming like all the groups do the same retreats on Catalina.

Hey, I’m an incoming freshman, and I was invited to join the Engineering Honors Program. I sent in my profile and everything within the deadline, but I didn’t get any confirmation back saying that the department received it. Should I be worried?

And the retreat does sound fun! I hope I can make it…
