USC Film/TV Production?

hey everyone, i'm applying to the film/tv production program at USC. i know its like the hardest one to get into (4% last year!?!?!?!!) and its real nervewracking to just wait. so anyone want to shed some light on my chances at USC?

from NJ
Korean-American
SAT - 1570
SAT II - 770, 710, 700
GPA - 89.5 UW, 90.2 weighted

ec:

student council (4 years)
school website
audio/visual tech club
intern at new york film academy
videographer at church youth group
4 years amateur videomaking

im alternating between feeling ok about my chances one day and feeling dismal about my chances the next. anyone want to give their opinion? thanks.

The only one I know who got into USC for film school (not sure which major) last year was my cousin. He had a 4.0 GPA, 1580 SAT, tons of ECs including President of the Latin Club. He also took a ton of AP classes, 7 senior year I think. He was also awarded a scholarship, but he decided to attend the film school at Florida State instead.

Your are right about production being the hardest major to get into.
You certainly have the credentials to get into USC, and probably win a scholarship, but admission into the film school isn't necessarily about academic credentials. Hopefully your essays are very well written and show your passion for film.

As an aside, when my son was applying to the production major he was warned by two different USC film students not to show too much film background, which he had and did. The production professors supposedly are looking to mold students to their own way of thinking. He's now in the critical studies program, which suits him intellectually, and gives him time to pursue other interests at USC. He gets a substantial amount of production courses. Be aware that the production major eats up all your time especially in the last few years. In any case even if you are not in the production major there are so many volunteer opportunities in film on campus that you could probably get an equivalent education in the technical aspects of filmmaking even without majoring in it.

My son was also acccepted into the FSU film program, but chose USC. He had a very, very negative reaction to his FSU interviews, wasn't especially thrilled with the campus, and wasn't impressed with the faculty. However, I can understand why someone might chose FSU over USC. The smaller program at FSU means there's less likelihood that you'll get lost there and you'll get more personal attention.

Last year the only kids we know who were directly accepted into the Film/TV production major had a 4.6 gpa, and a 4.4 gpa with excellent scores. The word on the street is that whatever USC's requirements are this department raises the ante. (This from a friend who teaches at USC). Obviously having connections in the business helps, as does a donation. My daughter entered undeclared and is transferring into the major (4.2 gpa, 1250 sat, professional work experience in the business). She made it to the "final cut" and then kids with higher gpas and sats sank her. Good luck!

Keep in mind that you can transfer in to the film school once you get to USC. Some majors, I think critical stdudies is one, allows you to be considered every semester. I'm not sure about production, but at a minimum you could be considered for production at the end of your first year and the end of your second or possibly every semester.

Right...that's what my daughter is doing.

transferring into film school i heard, is as hard, if not harder than getting accepted the first time around.

Soooo anxious to hear from the USC film school...also applying as a production major. I do have some experience in filmmaking but not a lot...is this required? Does it hurt you if your film experience is limited?

Transfering into the usc film is next to impossible, at the interview I had they made it a point to say that the number of students within the film school remains almost constant as compared to the ballon effect that happens at NYU (starts at about 100 and gets to 200-250)...

Everyone of the filmmakers I have met at USC has had extensive backgrounds in film (production, theory, professional world)...but I am sure they accept many without a lot of experience...goodluck.

Does anyone know if it's possible to hear from the film school before april? I am dying to know if I got in!

im pretty sure film school is after april only, at least on their website it says that

i know this is very late, but did you get accepted into USC? and also, was 1570 your SAT score out of 1600 (critical reading and math) or out of 2400?

At the time of January 2005, he would’ve taken the old SAT (out of 1600). The new SAT wasn’t administered until March 2005.

As was mentioned 7 years ago, SAT scores are not particularly relevant in admissions to the film school, so even if that guy were to check this, his answer would be of no use to you.

The original post is years old. Information would be out of date. triplit, I suggest you start a new thread. Ask questions or seek information about the USC School of Cinematic Arts today and your answers would be current.
