You should go over to the USC Transfer thread. Just click on my stats and look at my posts- it will bring you to the thread. Ask this question on the last page. Im transferring to USC and have met people who applied in film

I would compare USC Film more to Yale Law. They admit only double-digit amounts of students. I think they admitted 30 freshmen this year - transfer applicants are pending.

yes i understand how selective it is. at UCLA they only admit 15 from a 30 pre-selected group a year, which is almost ■■■■■■■■. and i’ve met a good amount of people who are in the USC program, and they seem like normal people. one of them is a family friend.

but the point here is that i want to know what i’m going up against, i can tell a very small amount of people on this entire discussion board have applied to USC film.

Some people who are absolutely meant to get in don’t get in, and other you wouldn’t expect, get in…its a strange/annoying system

The number of transfer applicants admitted is based off of spots open from 2012, not 2013. And you have to remember that people apply from within USC.

They don’t give out specific numbers like yield. But most admits attend.

geyser - I also applied for production. I applied last year and was rejected after an sgr. If I had to guess it was because I still had sophomore standing after the sgr, but it could have been aaaaannything so who knows. Right now I have 66 units completed, 3.82 gpa, spent this last year beefing up my portfolio and spent a lot of effort on my essays. Definitely to early to hear now, the earliest would be around May. Have you applied before? I got an interview at UCLA as well.

what’s an “sgr”?? what’s your portfolio looking like right now? I actually remember your UCLA post, i applied to UCLA, and haven’t received an interview call… so i know i didn’t get in, which is probably a bad sign for USC as well. But i have a lot of stuff as far as my portfolio goes. I’m not sure about my essays though, what exactly did you write about for your personal essay if you don’t mind me asking? This is my first time applying and my gpa aint that strong either so i shouldn’t expect to get in…

so you’re saying you applied freshman year, got rejected, and now you’re a sophomore applying again?

blsdmf, i want to know more about your app, apparently you’re what they’re looking for… but i dont want to push you over your personal boundaries

As for my portfolio I tried to make it varied. I had writing, scripts, photography, videos. For the personal essay I talked a lot about how my love for stories and storytelling has shaped what I want to do/why I want to work in the film industry. What did you write about? When it comes to film, you never really know what is going to happen. It’s not cut and dry on admissions and definitely isn’t based heavily around gpa. Don’t give up hope based on that. If you’ve got a strong portfolio and a strong essay you might be just what they are looking for. As for me, I might be what they’re looking for but who knows… definitely can’t say with certainty yet.

and to clarify on the sophomore/junior standing thing from last year… I applied with 48 units last year and had 60 after the spring semester/sgr. So technically I still wasn’t considered a junior by USC… which is why I believe I was still rejected. (it definitely wasn’t the grades… My spring grades were all A’s) So again, like I said, you just never know. don’t give up hope.

so was that your second year at a CC when you first applied? then i presume you’ve dedicated yourself to these two school, i don’t know if i should try doing what you did if i get rejected… wait another year hmmm… darn i don’t have as many units as you either, i’m just hitting 60 by the end of this spring… i wont be a junior hu?

for my personal essay i took an interesting dream i had and came up with my own meaning to it: living a life of your own not one that is made for you. and how i want to experiment with the ideas of these “extremes” in my films. i explained this to a current student there and she said i should be a philosophy major…kind of made me feel dumb hahaha… but i think i tried way to hard with it and they’ll prolly see that :-/ UCLA certainly wasn’t fond of it.

as for my portfolio, its filled with video of different types: documentary, experimental, narrative, music video. also have paintings, and photography…no writing… as far as my extracurricular activities go i should have an “A” in that section, i suppose everything else is on the edge…

The plan is to make it a major after I get in. I chose the film program as a minor and chose a major in the USC college of letters, arts, and sciences. I also applied to UCLA. Transfer students will receive notification late April. I don’t plan on getting accepted into UCLA either. I am from New York and I saw the percentage of out of state students admitted. Pretty low. FSU is another top film choice.

geyser- yes when I applied first I was in my second year. I was fortunate enough to be able to dedicate myself this year and try again… For junior standing at USC it is 64 units. I also applied to Chapman and Loyola Marymount so I didn’t necessarily dedicate myself just to USC and UCLA. I like the idea for the essay… they want you to stand out so I don’t know how that could be considered a bad thing.

I forgot about Loyola Marymount. I applied two years ago in my first year of college. I called up annoyed after being denied. The admissions person told me, “you should have applied to the literature program, you need a 4.0 for the film program.”

^^^ouch, stupid counselors, no one is ever right. just apply where you can…

well… yea, i’m pretty anxious just to know what happens to us all regardless.

have you guys looked at the new application writing samples? its pretty intense stuff.

hey blsdmf, let us know how that UCLA interview goes, its this saturday right? i wish you the best of luck buddy, show em who’s boss ;)… then come back and tell me all about it, hahahahaa.
