"USC Freshman Weighing his Options for a Major!"

Hello CC World,

I am a college freshman who goes to USC and am still deciding about my options for a major. I started as just a Comp Sci Major but then switched to a Comp Sci/Engineering track this semester. I did not like working with the hardware part … alot so I am deciding to switch out of the engineering. However, I am sure about Comp Sci (Programming) because I love it but do not know what to add on with it… I’m pretty much interested in Business and Finance, Cognitive Science and Neuroscience and even like making Video games.

So I’m equally interested in all of them so I don’t know what my heart wants. The other factors that carry weight are 1) Salary 2) Job growth and Stability 3) Ability to be creative in my job!

Now, USC gives a lot of options to choose from and here I am looking for advice from you guys

a) CSBA (Joint Bachelor program in Comp Sci and Business Administration) It’s a joint program offered by the school not a double major.

b) CS major (bachelors) and then a year of masters in financial engineering. I’ll be done in 5 years in this track.

c) Cognitive Science/Neuroscience (Bachelors) (Application of computing and programming in the medical industry + brain imaging)

d) CS + Games (Basically video game design and USC is hell of a school for this program specifically …ranks 1 or 2 countrywise). The only reason I’d want to go this route is that I get to take classes at USC Cinema School which again is really a hook in itself + games is probably doable.

I appreciate you guys taking the time out to give me your advice and perspectives on this matter!

Cheers

My daughter knew of someone who did a) and she ended up working at Box a company that was started by a USC person. But my advice is to follow your interest, a,b,c, d are all fine as long as you follow your interest because it’s sustainable in the long run. Working at something you don’t like grow old after a while.

Yeahh I know financially I’ll probably be secure with all of them it is just that how do I narrow it down logically now. I’ve made spreadsheets, talked to people but I’m like what if I regret not choosing the others? Haha any more opinions? Thanks Dr.Google.

I gotta go with Doc. Just follow your interests cause they are all great paths. You just can’t go wrong. If you were choosing straws which do you hope would come up?
