Let me first say that I know that there are countless existing housing threads, but this year Birnrkrant (what would have been my choice) seems to be all for Scholarships.

I am currently deciding between Pardee and something in Harris (North w/ sink.) I want to have a good experience with down to earth people who still like to go out to parties and be social, but not every night of the week.

Noise is a concern as I have trouble falling asleep, but I don't want to sacrifice bonding with potential friends later on. An additional concern is that New/North is known for having many of its members go on to rush, at this point I am still undecided but am leaning toward staying independent because of the shallow/materialistic negatives I have heard about greek life. Does anyone have any advice for me? I'm also open to other options.

New/North definitely has a menacing and aggressive Greek presence, if that’s what you are steering clear of. Pardee is a mix of social and studious but it is so big that you might end up with a loud floor. Marks Hall and Trojan Hall (where I am living rn) are smaller and quieter, but profit from the same area and walking distance from cool eateries and the libraries as the other dorms. Do ~not~ live at Parkside, I was at IRC for my first 2 months here and it was a hellish walk to and from my classes every day and only 2 of my 7 other suitemates spoke English.

As for rush, don’t feel pressured into doing it, although going through the preliminary steps can be a good way to meet people. As a female I have experienced some criticism from others for being a “GDI” but I still have an equally vibrant social life, which is less dependent on alcohol and attracting the male gaze at that. Plus, all girls get into frat parties so it’s not like you must rush in order to be able to party. I’ve met a few nice girls in the Greek system but generally they tend to stick with themselves and harbor disdain for everyone else (minorities, the not-so-wealthy, not conventionally attractive girls or guys). It is ultimately up to you whether or not you choose to rush, just don’t let the Greek life change you whether you are in our out of it.
