USC Housing

So, even if you're off campus, you still have USC housing? Does anyone know how USC housing comes into play when looking at financial aid?

At Explore USC this Monday, the Financial aid representative said they use $10,858 as the estimated room-and-board cost in figuring your USC need, regardless of which accomodations you choose. If your arrangements cost more than that amount, it would be out of your (or your parent's) pocket in addition to your EFC. The representative suggested calling the financial aid office with any questions.

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely take that into consideration. How does the EFC play into financial aid? Are you expected to pay the full EFC the FAFSA gives you?

According to the representative on Monday, they use both the FAFSA and CSS/Profile to come up with an EFC, so it is likely to be different than your FAFSA-generated EFC. In addition to your EFC, you will likely have a Stafford loan and work-study. You and your parents will be expected to contribute the EFC, but the financial aid office offers a number of ways to manage the EFC and seem very willing to discuss questions with parents and students at any time.

Ah, alright. Again, thank you. ^_^ My parents got like $12,000 for our EFC and they thought they had to pay that straight out, but I don't mind working it off or anything I need to to lessen what they have to pay.

So, even if you're off campus, you still have USC housing?

Yes, USC owns and operates over 20 buildings off campus. They are all within walking distance. The nice thing about USC housing is the leases are for the academic year only, the units are furnished and the contract is for yourself (meaning if your roommate flakes you don't get stuck with their rent).

Most of the buildings oncampus are for freshmen, except Webb Tower. However, it is still possible to apply to the freshmen buildings as an upperclassmen if you would like (although most students want to leave the dorms/suites after their first year).

It is also possible to live in university housing for four years, you just might have to be put on a waitlist to get a space, but they always assign everyone from the waitlist.

How is it for transfer students to find housing? I am trying to transfer in as a Junior, and I would prefer to live on campus, but from what I have been reading in this post, that seems highly unlikely. So is it easy for transfer students to still find housing? Also, how far are USC's off campus housing from the campus?

Housing is not guaranteed for transfers. However, it isn't impossible. Alot will depend on when you are admitted. Transfers who are admitted early (May and June) and apply for housing as soon as they are admitted should get offered something. Late admits (July) may not get housing depending on the year.

My advice is to apply as soon as you are admitted.

Thank you trojanchick .. this is what I am worried abt. I hope I don't get screwed over in housing if I am accepted. But then again, I guess there a lot of transfer students that are in the same boat as me =/

be careful about the sophomore housing "guarantee" because there was such a large freshman class this year that if everyone in your group gets a bad lottery time, you can end up with housing so far from campus that you can find non-university housing closer for cheaper.

Question :: If I put down my housing deposit and submitted my housing requests a week ago, are my requests still considered earlier than someone who only does it now, but fully commits to USC and does their $300 commital deposit?

Yes, Housing goes by the date you applied, as long as you commit to USC by the May 1 deadline.

Once you receive a an application fee receipt for the $30, you're ok right? Even though you haven't heard from Housing about your particular choices?

Anyone applied for Radisson?

My D stayed in Radisson during Explore. She liked it..the room was spacious and having a bathroom shared by only 2 is great. However, some have said if you are very social, Radisson feels a bit isolated, being across the street. Friends don't often come to visit or hang out, rather the Radisson people go other dorms where friends live.
Then if you prefer quiet, things can be unpredictable...apparently 2 of the floors are fairly quiet, and the other two are pretty noisy. It will depend on the students next year how the atmosphere is.
There are really good advantages to Radisson, as well as some things to consider.
Might be completely off but this was the scoop from some present students, and my Ds one night experience.

so i am confused...i am not 100% sure i am going to USC but can i still apply for housing?

actually i finished the housing process (except payment) because i wasn't sure i was "supposed" be allowed to.

I haven't been accepted, but when i logged into housing, it let me fill out the survey. I finished, and it asked me to pay so i stopped it. Should i just finish the application and hope i get in lol? Will they refund my money if I don't end up going?

Seriously, this is strange... i definately put in my USCID and i would think that they would only allow accepted students to do this. maybe i was supposed to apply for housing at the same time as the regular app and i'm behind?

"Only admitted students may apply"

ok... i just read this directly off of the USC housing site now that i looked for it.

so what does this mean that I was allowed to do the application process? can everyone else do this or is it just me?

Try! (even though i didn't actually submit the $30)

you have to register first, but my current login is my USCID

bump! 10 char please

I think New North is guaranteed for international students.. but otherwise housing is only guaranteed for freshmen.
