I am an upcoming IB Diploma student and I was wondering:

a) How much does it hurt you if you take SL Math Studies but want to do USC Science?
b) How much does USC care about your 9th and 10th grades or your grades before you enter IB?
c) Does USC only look at your IB grades, do the 9th and 10th grades not matter at all?
d) If take my three strongest subjects for highers does that make it seem as if I am not challenging myself?
e) Does USC highly recognize IB? As in, do IB students have an advantage when it comes to USC?

If you have some C's/4's in your 9th or 10th grade how much will it affect USC considering you? I am trying hard to raise my sophomore year grades but hypothetically if I improve and I reach USC IB requirements and the SAT requirements then would that mean that they will still consider me (Does anyone happen to know what they are by any chance, sorry) Will my 9th or 10th grades put me at a disadvantage compared to other students in my school or region?

Ok, I’ll give it a try. D is a full Diploma candidate, will be starting USC in the Fall (so excited).

In our conversations with Admissions staff, USC does recognize the commitment/difficulty of the IB program. And that each school administers the program in a slightly different format. In some cases you start IB in 9th grade, others you commit in 11th. Some schools offer more HL choices than others. Does your school offer other Math classes for IB? In D’s case, only Math SL is offered for this year’s graduates.

I believe that USC looks at all your grades, but an upward trend is helpful. Do what you need to do to improve Sophmore year. Ask teachers for help, find a tutor (maybe an IB student who needs CAS hours can help).

I realize this doesn’t answer all your questions, I hope it helps.

hey, I think that in terms of taking math studies. I think that it you will be at a disadvantage just merely due to the fact that math studies does not cover nearly as much as math SL or even standard high school math. However, it also depends on the science that you plan to study in university as some are more math intensive than others.
