Just curious as to what the relationship is between these northern and southern universities.

I think Cal is more in the USC position, where they’re joked as the Stanford rejects, much like how USC is joked as the LA rejects.

Also, UCLA and USC are rivals and Stanford and UC Berkeley are another pair of rivals.

yeah, the joke “what’s the difference between UCLA and USC students?” comes to mind. It’s used in both NorCal and SoCal areas.

UCLA and U$C are rivals
Cal and Stanford are rivals

To a much lesser extent, Cal and U$C are rivals

In terms of campus similarities (with the exception of acceptance rates),

USC is to Stanford and UCLA is to Berkeley.

Also, the way each campus operates validates this analogy. You just can’t look at rivalry and academic rankings alone.

USC campus is in a challenged urban setting, much like Cal, and very unlike Stanfurd. In this way, the analogy breaks down.

Cal and UCLA campuses are very different from each other. Even the campus buildings are very different. Both campuses are beautiful however.

Stanford’s Spanish architecture makes it unique and “classy” or posh. USC’s campus looks ordinary to me. Nothing that would really strike you as something picturesque…
