USC life in LA

How is the area of LA where USC is located? I got mixed reviews of the college town.

It's not the nicest part of town, that's for sure. I wouldn't walk around there at night by myself.

Its LA Central next to decrepit Coliseum. Not much around but Mexican bars and tacoqueria's. If you like the hispanic culture and burritos then thats your cup of of tea. UCLA on the other hand is located in trendy Westwood, next to Beverly Hills and quasi-trendy West Hollywood.

So why is the school so popular and why does anyone go there if it is in such a bad area?

yea, there seems to be an anti-usc sentiment in cc. personally, when i visited, i thought the campus was pretty nice.

The campus itself is nice...it's just the area around it that is not the most attractive or safe part of LA.

lol its not bad as people say. dont be scared, if usc area was so life threatening dangerous people wouldn't apply, and their selectivity wouldn't be so high. You have to have an open mind, if your close yourself to stereotypes you'll have a problem with the area around USC. But USC itself is a typical college campus.

Even if USC is in the ghetto, almost everything is just a few minutes away. It would take you about 15 or 20 minutes to walk to the Staples Center or Downtown LA (then again, it would take you 10 minutes or so to walk to South Central). It is like the world (or Los Angels at least) is all within your grasp. The area is bad to some people but not bad to others. Much of it depends on how scared you are of minorities. Personally, I would love to visit Columbia to see how the area compares.

the area immediatly around USC is generally safe, but a little ugly. its typical for an urban school. shyboys right, if you go west the arear generally gets better, go east and it gets ugly. the nicer and uglier parts really are in your grasp. the campus is pretty much in downtown, its right in the middle of nice and ugly.

my exguardian's brother went there some 15 years ago and he told me not to apply coz the area is not that nice

I LUV USC...okay no it's not located in smack in the nicest part of town...but it's nto far away from the nicest parts either.

I'm not in college yet, but I'm a Cali-native and all i have to say is: Los Angeles is the best freakin city in the world. It just can't compare with any other place

Let me expand in case you're not from here LoL. Okay if I wouldn't say it's a good "college town" in that it caters to students specifically...but your idea of the city depends onwhat you're looking for. To sum it up: LA has major character. We've got bad areas, swank areas, run-of-the-mill areas etc...there are ALLL sorts of people ehre, from every race, every nationalisty, every walk of life.

SOO MUCH TO DO: so much CULTURE. You want to see a symphony perform? Go to Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (minutes away from SC) want to see rare art? (The Getty's only a few minutes away as well) want to ski, beach, shop on Rodeo Drive, hike, eat at one of the gazillion amazing restaurants in LA...there's Koreatown, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Olvera Street--churches, synagogues, mosques, buddhist temples, hindu temples etc...you can do EVERYTHING here and if not RIGHT here, stuff is just minutes or a few hours away.

I luv L.A. =)

We Love It!!!

Flopsy & MrTrojanMan, Did you guys see the game this weekend? That s***t was pimp!! So, so close! Will the Bruins end the Trojans record winning streak next year? We'll see!

Not necessarily. Yale is one of most selective schools in the nation, but it's still in a crummy neighborhood. The area around Penn has been known to be kind of scary as well. USC (which is far less selective than either school) has a campus that is fine, but it's in a scuzzy neighborhood too. Sorry Trojans, but the truth is the thruth.

oh, the game. the game....that game made me sweat...a little. my hat off to ucla, even though they had 2 wks to prepare, they really made the most of it. and ucla's coach went bananas off that bad call, did u see that? i would, too. just not that intense.

i cant wait untill ORANGE BOWL.

that game could cost leinart a heisman trophy

MTM knows that I'm not the most likely person to stick up for USC but I'm compelled to say that most of the negatives said about the neighborhood around USC are from people not at ease in an urban environment and don't know how to read the street "cues." Or worse, from folks who judge neighborhoods by the predominant color of pedestrian skin, as with Columbia.

The campus itself is pretty safe. I don't have the exact numbers but there's some federal website for crime stats on any university receiving federal funds and you can check it out. The worst I can say is that they will do their best to paper over, reduce charges, get people not to testify, etc. for the hired help, e.g., high-profile football players who do something stupid. But even that is pretty damn rare and if you consider USC as a city of 30,000 people on its own, the crime rate is not remarkable.

I have no problem with the surrounding area in the daytime. The area is predominantly black working-to-middle class. The "University Surrounded by Crips" reputation is highly overblown. In any urban environment, it pays to have some street smarts. I would not go out casually in one's and two's after dark into the neighborhood but then, truthfully, there is little reason to do so. For most of what I would call the interesting parts of LA, you definitely need a car. If you're from out of area, most of the locals will have one, so getting a ride should no problem. Public transport isn't great. Note: bringing in a car from out of state gets you hit with a hefty registration fee and you have to sometimes adjust the carbueration to get optimal performance with the California-blend gasoline.

LA is a great college town. Good enough to interfere with studying if you're not disciplined.

UCLA had three weeks off and that was one of the worst calls going back to the Eric Aftholter phantom reception. Not only would I have gone ape, I did go ape. I hope the Pac-10 is reviewing the officiating from the game...having watched the tape, it was only the most egregious of the bad calls. On the last UCLA play that resulted in an interception, a Trojan DB was practicing a wrestling move on a UCLA receiver...completely missed.
