USC life in LA

USC is so darn expensive!!!!! My student loan bills come up to about $600 per month! All that for choosing to go to USC for my masters. I could have went to a few other schools with fellowships but opted for the USC name on my diploma. I dont regret it though. Not yet at least.

Oh yeah, I owe like $30/month for attending UCLA as an undergrad.

meh, another 16k gonna be gone soon.
U$C is indeed "America's Top Mercenary College."

But don't think about the money too much. Just work hard to get a scholarship. Or get an intern job at summer. Try to find some opportunity to get involved with faculty, such as working in their labs, which can help you financially and academically.

I concur USC is not for everybody. If money is a big concern of you, go to UCLA, or UCSD, ... But if everything is equal, USC may give you a better experience overall.

My writing 140 class has got to be the most helpful class I've taken, and one of my favorites. Maybe because she was a grad student and not a hardened professor, my teacher was sweet, down-to-earth, and ALWAYS willing to help. And help she did. It felt like I was constantly writing a paper for that class, but I learned a LOT. We had multiple one-on-one sessions before and after essays where she would critique my writing. She made class interactive, so even though it was a 9 am class (MW and F) we were involved with things so we didn't fall asleep during a lecture.

Don't go into the class with a negative attitude off the bat. You might just learn a lot. A lot of people I know hated this class, but I think it was only because there was so much writing involved, which I think in the long run is a good thing.

I hope you're as lucky as I was, and that if you stick around, your classes improve.

Too bad I don't have green card, I am paying the same amount no matter in UC's or in USC. BTW, I also got accepted to UCLA.

I feel like starting "How USC rips off its students." and "How food sux at USC thread."

Well, you still can get an internship job, or on-campus jobs. I was also an international student, and totally understand your situation.

But I do feel sorry for USC because they admitted you and you chose them. Otherwise we gonna hear a lot of "UCLA sucks" or "UCLA ripping off its students":)

Being a first generation immigrant myself, I am really grateful of american's hospitality, and appreciate what they presented for us, education, career opportunity, notion of freedom or free-thinking, etc.

My opinion, money issues should be the least thing you should've compained about because you made the choice, and you always can change heart to other schools. That being said, I paid my and my wife's tuition for master degrees in CASH. And we are still repaying the money.

Your opinion is always welcomed here. But think it over before you sound it off, the audience here deserves a balanced, and well-thought view of any school. Anyways your stories will give high-schoolers some reminders, or hints about what they should ask, or think about when they visit a school, class size, teacher, TAs, food, loan, job, ...

How is the dorm food at USC, anyways?

I know I should start my own thread about this, but I really appreciate if someone can answer my question.
I am not trying to look naive or anything, but i am kind of worried about 'the safety thing', what if i had late classes and is it ok to walk on campus when its dark?? Or the campus is dead at that time??
The reason i am asking this is when i read the crime alert on usc website and I try to imagine myself in that situation. I dont even know if i can go on with my life if smthg bad ( ginshot, assaut) happened to me.. it sounds like a nightmare. .. Please ppl keep in my mind I am knew to LA and I am kind or worried ..
thank .

I don't exactly know the answer. But you can ask yourself: how did other people survive? How in the hell they got a party school rep. if you cannot even walk at dark? Even TheDad (a career USC basher) said it is ok safety-wise should I say more.

They have 30,000 students + staff + faculty, who mostly like to work late. I can find a lot of threads on CC talking about this, do you really need more? How much is enough? I guess the USC students alreadly feel tired of this. Just try one term, if you don't feel well, transfer

there is a campus cruiser thing to escort students at nite.

TheDad - i completely disagree with you. the average gpa for a USC acceptee is around 3.9, if i remember correctly.

Cmaher, the issue of debate isn't whether or not someone shouldn't go to USC if they want to. There's an entire USC forum and you would never find me there trying to sway opinions. The issue at hand is the preposterous notion where someone claimed that USC is an academically elite insitutution. Btw, this is not a board for teenagers. It's a board for those interested in college admissions, both hs students and adults. Otherwise, you would not have CC management contact several parents to stick around and continue to offer their insights after their children have gone through the process and are off to college.

Auscguy, the "flop on!" has been used only in response to the two most pretentious posters about USC.

StarryQT, that the average incoming GPA at USC is 3.9 is true but irrelevant. First, grade inflation has made 3.9's a dime-a-thousand. Secondly, that says nothing about the academic environment and priorities at USC. I would refer you to MisterTrojanMan and Afterhours, whose posts I've duly quoted in my responses.

Haneen, not this again. I'll put it this way: as a father, I would not have been worried about my teenage daughter being on campus, night or day, any more than I would have at...oh, to pick a school at random out of the wild blue...UCLA. Nor, for that matter, off-campus in the immediate vicinity during the day. At night, off-campus, I would prefer for her to be in groups of 3-4. The "danger" factor at USC is highly overblown. It's in the central part of a big city and a little bit of city "street smarts" are required...and I would say the same of NYU, George Washington, Barnard, Boston U., Emory, and bunches of other schools located in an urban environment.

Alwaysthere, "career USC basher"...umm...no, not really. If someone claims it's a reasonably good school, I would be pretty silent. If someone is worried about safety, I'd reassure them on that score. If someone asked about Music or Film, I'd be very enthusiastic. If someone adopts pretensions of elite status, I will contest it.

I personally compare USC, to Northwestern and Vanderbuilt, maybe Carnegie Mellon.

Oh and NYU too.

NYU and Vandy are fair cops. Northwestern I'd put a notch higher.

im surprised nobody mentioned this: USC was "Princetown Review's and Time Magazine's School of the Year in 2000"

Afterhours, you are niftily trying to change the terms of the debate. No one is claiming that UCSB is among the ranks of the elite insitutions, which was what was posited here about USC. UCSB is seen mainly as a party school and it's certainly more than that, which is where the "underrated" comes from. Certainly, for majors such as Physics or Economics, I would recommend UCSB over USC in an instant, just as I would rec USC for Film, Theater, and Music over UCSB. I need no defense; indeed, I find it amusing that you and your cohorts have managed to provide me with quotes needed to sustain my points. I suggest that you don't go out for the Debate team.

My goodness...... shakes head. I was showing the inconsistencies in your posts; one a neutral assessment and the other a CLEAR negative attack. It had nothing to do with UCSB, you could of been talking about University of Alaska, my point still would of stood. I'm really sorry you couldn't understand that.

I'm a business major, I could care less whether my argumentation is quote-free. The fact that you are pointing out that posters provide you with "quotes" shows your true approach to this thread. It's sad that this is almost a game to you, and that you actually STORE these quotes. I suggest you get a life?

Give it up TheDad you've already made yourself look like a blithering fool. You try to portray yourself as the civil informer, but nearly everyone in this thread has already commented on your inappropriate ways.
