USC Marshall VS. NYU Stern

I just recently got accepted into USC and NYU, both for undergraduate. I am majoring in business/finance so I would be going to their business schools. I am not taking into account proximity to home or cost, so please can I get some opinions on which I should choose.

Congratulations on your acceptances.

I would say that NYU Stern is better known nationally, although that is up for argument. However, NYU Stern would definitely be better preparation for a career in finance or investment banking. It has a much better location, and you are more likely to get recruited.

go to NYU.

I realize this isn't helpful at all, but I kind of hate you for getting to make that choice.

I want to go to Stern so bad. I suppose I'll find out in 8 and a half months.

well I still want to get the whole college experience, and I feel like USC will get me that. What bugs me about NYU is that it really doesn't have a campus and the dorms aren't all that nice and they don't really do sports or anything like that while USC is like the pinnacle of nice campus and parties and all that

well, if it's a traditional college experience you want, USC is a better choice.

I know a couple of kids at USC, all of them love it. a lot.
you really can't go wrong.

If you want to end up working in LA, go to USC. If you want to end up working in NY, go to NYU. If you don't know where you want to end up working, decide where you want to go to school in LA or New York City. They are hugely different. You must know which you prefer.

i mean wouldnt it be possible that i went to usc and ended up in nyc and vice versa

stern has better recruiting in nyc, wall street, etc. it also is the top of its field in fiance. but, usc has better social life and better sports. pick the school based on your preference, but, academically, stern has an edge.

Go to the one that gives you better aid. NYU isn't known for being generous with aid.

If you want to work in New York, I'd recommend NYU. It's just common sense to go to school, do internships, whatever where you want to end up working. I think there is a BIG potential advantage, if you want to work in LA area, to going to USC.

well i got 5300 a semester @ NYu, but money isnt going to be a deciding factor for me. I do what to end up living/working in ny, but i if i want to nyu i feel like i would be missing out on the college lifestyle that is present at sc but not at nyu

Sounds to me like you really want to go to USC. In that case, go to USC, just try to keep in contact with New York if possible. Try to do summer internships if you can. But don't be surprised if at the end of the day you end up living and working in LA. ;-)

NYU stern for finance.

Go to USC. They have much better campus life (D1 sports, a campus, parties), and it seems like that's important to you. And the business program is really good with a strong alumni network.

i mean yeah i agree but is it going to be a wasted oppurtunity if I go to USC with NYU being so good for my future career aspirations

Go to NYU. Maybe you will be missing out on some "traditional college experiences", but you will find friends and end up being happy. The difference is not so drastic that at one school you will want to kill yourself and the other you will be in heaven.

http://www2.marshall.usc.edu/emplibrary/2006%20Placement%20Report.pdf

shows that among those who got employed at the time of the survey, 4.3% got their employment in the NE. i don't know how much of that got to do with students' preference. you may want to find out the real reason behind that low percentage if your goal is to work in NYC. notice also the firms that hire the most are primarily accounting firms, not finance/investment banking/MC firms.

Nope. A big name school is a big name school. USC will give you plenty of job opportunities.

Seriously, college is supposed to be the best four years of your life. Go where you'll be happiest. I disagree with Stringa. Being in the kind of environment you like will make a world of difference.

Well finance is definitely what I want to end up doing and NYU is known for being big on finance. Thanks for all the advice guys, really but I still have a LOT of research to do before I make up my mind

would love to hear how this turned out?
