I received a letter from USC saying "we have completed a preliminary review of your application file and are writing to request further information"

It goes on to ask me to send in mid-year reports. I know every student needs to send in mid-year reports, but does this mean that they reviewed my application and are still considering me as an applicant?

I figured I would be flat-out rejected from USC because of my SAT scores, but I figure that they wouldn't waste their time sending this if they know 100% that I have no chance of acceptance.

Am I reading into this to much, or does this letter signify that I still have a fighting chance?

They say that they “completed” the preliminary review, so that can’t be a bad thing. It is possible that the preliminary review was just to see if everything was there, however. You definitely have a chance. Best of luck!

May I ask what’s the date of the letter please? 'Cause i’m applying to USC as well. And I got bad SAT scores too. Just wanna get moreinformation. =)

I have pretty good SAT (2150) and got this too. The thing is I got this after I already sent them my mid year report. This leads me to the conclusion that they send the letter to everyone.

Not everyone has to send mid-year reports. Unlike many other higher ranked colleges, USC makes them optional unless, like with you, it has sepecifically requested it. What the letter means is that you still have a chance and you better send the mid- year report.

It mailed out February 16th, but I just received it today.

And they may have not processed your mid-year reports by the time they complied a list of who to send it to. I really don’t know if it’s random or not.
