USC Move In Day-Class of 2013

Greeney, during welcome week, they will have shuttles taking people to and from Target to buy some last minute things. You do have to RSVP before move-in day.

I’m a 2012 from the Midwest. I can tell you that I arrived around 3pm on Move-In Day (we drove), and everything was fine. It didn’t take very long to put my stuff away (and I have a LOT). I stayed in a hotel with my mom until Friday, when she left. I cried for 3 days and felt like I’d never feel happy again. Come September, I made friends of my own (before that, I just hung out with my hallmates- they were nice but we didn’t have a lot in common), and the rest of the year went wonderfully.

Thanks, Mayfield7.
We are flying to Los Angeles August 19, so we will have to buy everything (supplies, groceries, printer…), and I will be back home August 21. I noticed that Shuttles are only available on Sunday, August 23. Well, I’m sure we can take a Taxi.

Greenery, out of curiosity, where are you flying in from?

We are flying from Atlanta.

Unless freeway driving scares the heck out of you, it might be cheaper and easier to just rent a car with GPS at the airport, assuming internet travel sites have good deals at the moment. This way you could hit Target/Ikea/BB&B at your convenience.

I was not able to be with my son on this day … I have to work and to be with my little son tomorrow – he is starting first grade.
If somebody can share how is going? I just want to feel the spirit.

It was a pretty exhilarating morning-- all the cars, students, parents, and STUFF. There is stuff (clothing, electronics, bikes, baskets, cartons, books, etc) everywhere, since a lot of families arrive at their dorms/apartments and unload at the curb in the designated areas. Then someone (usually mom) waits with the stuff while student goes off to get one of the huge rolling bin they have available and the stuff eventually moves in. Just seeing all the energy and excitement is a lot of fun.

Returning students smile at the new freshmen and there is a great deal of Trojan family feeling all around.

But soon enough, the parents are shooed away and the kids start to find out about their new roommates or re-unite with last year’s friends.

Sorry you couldn’t make it, nchalakova, but while your son might have liked having your help unpacking (mine really didn’t need my help at all, btw) for about an hour, after that he would most likely just want to disappear into the happy throng.

We got there about 2:30, things were settling down at that point. S and his roommate’s set ups are a study in contrast. Us: minimal… new sheets, old towels. Them: can’t imagine how they got it all there in one car. They got there at 9 and were still building storage units when we left for the Marshall reception and S ran off with friends. Marshall gave a nice presentation, no new information, but certainly reinforcing the excellent program. And beer, wine & dessert after!

Thank you so much for the info! I wish everybody good luck and success!

Happy move-in, everyone! My son is a sophomore, and I really miss being there to catch the excitement of move-in day. I love reading these posts (heck, I even love watching the commercials where the families are getting ready for the big day :). I was able to help get him outfitted for apartment life, but once he was in the car and leaving our driveway, my job was done.

For those parents of freshmen, please know that your kids will have a great time at USC, even if the initial adjustment is a little tough. I recommend becoming internet friends with some other freshman parents - it will help you know more about what’s going on.
