I applied during the january deadline and i just received a call from USC about this scholarship, and how i was on some list of students and should be proud of myself. I looked online and it said it's actually a need-based grant for those with financial need and community awareness. My friend called them and they said they didn't call because of financial need since it's too early to tell who needs it now or something.

So is it anything special that they called me?
did anyone else get this call?

sorry, i'm just so nervous because USC is my first choice. ><

^^ mine is still "we have completed preliminary review" also, arrgg lol
good luck to you too!
oh are you first generation college student?
since it said on the app that they give special attention to first generation..

i hope someone who knows more about thisd can reply in here

oh, wow. I must have looked at your post twice already, and i just noticed that you asked me a question! Sorry!

Yes, I am first generation. I think thats why we got the app in the first place.

I wish someone knew * something *. I mean, I only mailed it out 5 days ago and the suspense is already killing me. My status finally moved to a request for midyear grades, which I immediately sent in. :-/

^ hey :)
yeh my status is now the committee is reviewing your app, i think this is the last stage ><. by the way, did they email you the app or call you?
cuse i got both. and when the guy who called said something about being proud so i think there's something good that we got it, not just b/c we're first generation.

by the way may i know your stats?
my is not soo impressive :(

My school doesn't rank but our own guesses put me in the bottom of the top 10% in a relatively competitive public school

Really good EC's -- Editor in Chief of both the yearbook and the lit mag, NHS, Pretty good comm serv.

what about you? (and why doesn't anyone know anything about this!?! I read every inch of the website and i still don't really get it. :-) )

oh, one difference between the two of us -- I applied for the Dec deadline. Where are you from, anyway, an9890? I live in NY, so its not the proximity thing for me.

my:
gpa: 3.7
sat: 1900
honors and ap courses

at school: treasurer of christian club; visual arts and design academy
over 200 hours of community service

oh and i live in CA haha. Since you applied for the Dec deadline, did you get any other scholarships?

and i've read this forum soo much too but no one has said anything about this. I guess we'll just have to wait like mid march i think?
if you get anything, do you mind replying here? or maybe email me (trgan9890@gmail.com)

I hope we both make it to the interviews, cuse then maybe we can meet up or something lol ! :)

i'll obvvv keep you posted if I hear anything, but chances are that you'll hear first, being in CA. It takes foreverrrrrrrrr for mail to get out to the East coast.

Nope, I didn't get any other scholarships, not that I was expecting to, lol.

But, now, I have a new question: There are interviews for this?!

lol yep there are interviews. if we like make it to the finals (i guess you can call it that) then we'll get an interview invite, like for the other scholarships. then after the interview, they'll make the final decision of who's going to get it. Such a hassle !

i also got an email for that scholarship. they didn't call me tho lol, but i live in washington state. hopefully thats good news. I have another classmate who applied to usc and she hasn't mentioned anything about her getting it, but i didn't ask because i didn't want it to seem like i was bragging if she didn't..both ur test scores are wayyy higher than mine, i got 1810, but i have a 3.74 unweighted gpa, like 4.4 or 4.4 weighted, and was in the top 7% last year, but don't know where i am now cuz so many kids have dropped out. I also have over like 400 hours of community service, a lot of helping inner-city children and am also first-generation. and i live with my aunt and uncle because my parents are in jail. so they might just be appealing to my story and character instead of scores.

i really hope we all make it tho because they didn't say there was a limit on how many people get the scholarship did they?

i didn't know that they invite u to interview for other scholarships...but thats good i guess

no they didn't say a limit, so let's hope we all make it lol!

by the way have you been accepted already?
I'm wondering if this by any chance would help us with acceptance ><
do you know if first generations have a better chance or something like that of getting in?

no, i haven't been accepted YET (HOPEFULLY haha)..
i know that being a first-generation college student gives you preference for the scholarship, but i have no idea if that counts in the actual admissions process. i'm so nervous tho its crazy...and i takled to another friend, this one lives in LA, who said that they didn't hear anything about the norman topping scholarship. So far, you, ponydance, and I are the only ones I know of being notified about the scholarship. I would say that its a good thing that they contacted us because on the NTSAF website, it says that they do not automatically send applications to all those eligible for financial aid...so i have my fingers crossed.
When did they tell you about the scholarship? they sent me the email on jan 28. Thats so good that they called you tho, that must mean something special!!

hey!
uggh yeah i really do hope it means something good for us...
they notified me by email on jan 28 as well but they called me on a friday somewhat close to the time they emailed me. at first when i saw the email, i decided not to apply since i thought "hey, it must be something they send to everyone" kind of thing. And i wasn't expecting to win any scholarships anways.

Buttt... then they called and I was like oh darn, could it mean something? I better apply now lol. It's such a hassle too since it'd due on feb. 15 and they send it so late, what with having to write a bio and asking for recs and everything.

i seriously hope all 3 of us get in (no one at my school got email either and i know a bunch who are firs generation/poor/good ecs..). that would be so great. Hope you can reply here if you get anything soon!

haha, no u didn't write too much, i always rite a lot. yea, i would say that them calling u is verrryyyy good news. i was wondering why they sent notifications out so late too because the website says that it was open since october. but to be on the optimistic side, its probably a really good thing that they came to us about it...but im wondering how long its gonna take them to notify us since its already mid march. unless they don't notify u if u're not a finalist, which would be really annoying
