USC or NYU?

I am trying to shorten my college list for the upcoming fall... USC and NYU are similar enough that I only want to apply to one of them.

I want to get involved with Business, maybe even the movie/entertainment industry, but the business perspective of it, mostly. Therefore, I would aim for Stern or Marshall, not their respective film schools (though proximity could definitely be useful). I would not want to enter business as an accountant or IBanker, so finance and accounting are not especially important. Economics, management, and other areas of business would be the most interesting to me. Graduate school placement is very important, and I am aiming for top business schools. Also, I am still considering International Relations as a major, so a difference between USC and NYU in this area of study might be convincing.

The academics in the areas I listed would be the most important, and location would only matter with regards to opportunity in those fields. I'm open to compromise on most of the differences between these schools.

Just a note: I live in SoCal, and my father + grandfather went to USC. I am not sure if I want to break from this trend, haha. However NYC sounds exciting, I would be comfortable in either NY or LA.

Any opinions would be great, thanks.

I would go for USC. Marshall has a broader area of concentration than of NYU, especially in the non-finance areas. I’m from Southern California(949 area code) also. For me, New York is always a nice place to visit, but if you’re any bit like I am, enjoy the sun, love the beach…etc. all that good stuff. living there might have it’s problems… it gets kind of cold.

Anyways, considering your interest, USC would definitely serve you better. Also, don’t forget Marshall (USC) has one of the best alumni networks among schools, so getting a job especially in SoCal wouldn’t be a problem. Good Luck!

thanks sktldms. i was also thinking that, with USC’s alumni network, getting good work experience during and after my degree will be easier and thefore beneficial for business school acceptance later on…? or maybe it wouldn’t even make a difference. i’m sure NYU has great opportunities as well.
this is tough. again, weather is not enough to help me decide :/

To me those schools aren’t similiar at all. If you don’t want to do Ibanking this seems like a nobrainer to go to USC. I expect that you will have a much better “college” experience there as well.

Thanks, I am starting to get the feeling that USC would be a much better option. I guess that NYC just seemed so exciting to me.

I definitely agree with VectorWega here. You’re not into ibanking so forget about all of the nonsense that usually goes on here with rankings and which school is more prestigious. USC is a great school with a great alumni network where you will get a great education and you will find a job. Not to mention the girls are soo much better at USC, you have real sports teams, the weather is great, and it is a guaranteed good time.

Since you might go into film/entertainment business, either one will be fine but NYU’s Tisch courses will benefit you while you are in Stern. I know NYU also has a very competitive IR major. I know Marshall is good but I can’t speak for USC’s film or IR department.s

You can’t go wrong with either one, good luck choosing.

one of major aspect you should consider is where you plan to work after college graduation

do you want to work on wall street or the east coast in general? NYU carries more prestige on the east coast

or do you want to work on the west coast in L.A./cali? USC degree would serve you better

USC and NYU are the two top film schools. Every ranking I have seen has either had USC #1, NYU #1, or both tied at #1.

USC’s film school is certainly the top film program in the country at the moment (taking into account their new facilities and equipment). I think Tisch is seriously lagging behind as schools like USC and Chapman begin to embrace newer technologies. USC has a motion capture stage… and at the beginning of next year will have an obscene number of sound stages (I think Tisch has one). You also have to take into account that there isn’t a lot of leeway between schools at NYU. If you are a Stern kid it’s much harder to take courses at Tisch. At USC the interaction is much greater and there is a huge encouragement to delve into what the other schools have to offer. I was in a similar situation (accepted to both USC and NYU)… I chose USC.

There is a major within Marshall at USC called Business of Cinematic Arts. It seems like something you might really be interested in (their internship opportunities are surreal).

there is a tisch minor at nyu that is easy to pick up if you are at stern. Also, Stern has a specialization called EMT or something, I think its entertainment something something. lol. Although I cant remember the name, from what I have read, its great. Its a big thing for people who want to go into marketing or producing. I am thinking of doing this as well. Also, nyu has the stern tisch entertainment business association and tons of alumni dinners that provide for tons of alumni interactions. Im from Long Beach, CA, and was also accepted to both programs at usc and nyu. I crossed off sc pretty quickly after I got into georgetown, but I think it all depends on the person. SC does definitely have a more traditional college experience, and you have to be much more independant at nyu, but some people, like me, like that aspect of it. Best of luck whereever you end up.

thanks, these are all great posts, but it seems the more i read on these schools, the bigger the dilemma becomes! hopefully by next fall i will have decided haha

hmm these 2 schools are a closeeeeee call.

depends on where you wanna be after college.

also, which is easier to transfer into as a rising junior?
