Hi guys. This forum seems to be really helpful so i was hoping i could get some help. I was hoping to transfer from a JC to USC or UCLA to work towards being a broadway singer. I know that neither of these offer musical theatre as a major but I was wondering which, in your opinion would be the better University to look into to try to further my musical theatre career. You see, I need to stay in SoCal to help my parents out financially, physically, and emotionally so I really need to find an appropriate school within the L.A area, other schools other than USC and UCLA would be okay too…thanks for any advice!

I would say that out of the two, UCLA is stronger. It's also MUCH cheaper for CA residents. However, I would look into both UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton, as they both have fairly reputable programs.

UCLA does offer it as a major...from what I understand its a rather recently-implemented BA Musical Theater program. I was looking strongly at transferring there as well if I decided not to go to Boston.

I also believe that if you go to a JC for 2 years - within the state system of CA - you have a 'buy' into one of the UC campuses - of course - they tell you ONE of the UC campuses - not necessarily your first choice - but keep those grades up and you would certainly have a good shot.

Cal State Fullerton has a good MT program. there is a Prof from there that has posted extensively on this site. check out the archives.

Here is the description of the UCLA B.A. program in theater: http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/catalog/catalog05-07-7-107.htm There is a musical theater focused track (Ray Bolger Musical Theater) within this B.A. degree program but you should check about how/if transfers can participate. As a B.A. program, UCLA is not offering the intensive BFA Acting or MT focus of the other schools typically discussed on this forum; however, it is a strong, academically selective B.A. program (much more emphasis on liberal arts courses within the requirements). USC does offer a BFA Acting program http://theatre.usc.edu/degree-programs/bachelor-of-fine-arts.html or a BA Acting program in Theatre http://theatre.usc.edu/degree-programs/bachelor-of-arts.html with the option to minor in Musical Theatre through USC's Thornton Music School. The BFA Acting would be hard to transfer into because students are admitted by audition in the freshman class and move as a group through their coursework and one performance annually, while being eligible for casting in all other shows produced. Hope this helps.

A friend of mine was trying to transfer to UCLA's MT program, he said that they accept about 5 or 6 transfer students into the program a year.

USC has JRB!!

thanks so much. all of your repsonses have been so helpful!

My daughter went to a performing arts school and about 4 from her graduating class are going to UCLA and a few more decided on Cal State Fullerton. Of the two I believe Fullerton has been around longer and has an excellent reputation. I'm not sure but I believe Fullerton has a cut system.

I'm a friend of Lexismom's D, and have the same friends. We have 3 going to UCLA for MT, and 2 going to USC for the BA Acting/MT Minor. I have to admit that it seems the UCLA program seems incredibly strong, but is highly more academic, and not exactly as hands on as one would like.

I'm actually applying as a transfer this year for MT at UCLA.

I am going to apply as a transfer to ucla for MT. I was rejected this year. One of my friends encouraged me to try again though. He applied as a freshman, was rejected, then after two years of community college, applied for junior standing and was admitted as a MT transfer. He is REALLY happy with the program, and says it is the hardest thing he has ever done. He is constantly working on his craft, and gives a great review of the ucla program. Also, I have a few friends that attend USC. They're in the BA Theater program, and I have one friend in the BFA program. My friends in the BA program say it's good, but they feel like their not growing enough. My friend in the BFA program says he feels like he has no control, and wanted to take some additional music classes, but was unable to with the demanding schedule. In the end, it's up to preference. I hope I get in as a transfer to ucla, everywhere else is too expensive.

Best of Luck

I am currently a USC undergrad freshman who works at the Drama Center there. I am from NY. I’m majoring in Stage Management. While USC has a great connection with the film school here we do about 14 stage shows a semester. We also have about 7-8 ISPs (Independent Student Productions) each semester. We have a musical theatre minor that is 27 credits as well as dance and voice classes you can take. We do 1 musical a year and have a few ISP musicals (such as Musical Theatre Repertoire). The teachers here are 2nd to none so if you’re worried about the training you’ll get you have nothing to worry about. USC SOT (School of Theatre) doesn’t teach you to be a movie star, it teaches you to be an actor. Just look at our alum (Forest Whitaker, Kyra Sedgwick, etc). We also have internships that will take you all over the country. While you are studying while at SC we have students who get there SAG and Equity cards while they are still in school. It’s also a great way to build up your resume. USC

USC has the the largest amount of financial aid. We gave out about $650 million worth of aid last year. Almost everyone I know here is on scholarship. Keep in mind that UCs have gone up 30% this year. I have friends from Cali who say that they would be paying more at a UC if they had gone. I also recently hosted an overnight student who withdrew her application from UCLA because their audition was so disorganized.

If you have any other questions please let me know :)

Thank you so much for posting. It is great to have current students post here!! Please be aware however, that the posts you are responding to on this particular thread are two years old. You may want to share about USC on the USC MT Forum.

I have to say that my daughter auditioned as a transfer this year for UCLA and could not have been more impressed with the audition process. She has gone thru Unifieds twice, and only auditioned at 2 on-site auditions, including the UCLA one. She attended an east-coast BFA program for only one semester before she decided it wasn’t for her, so she finished at a CC and is now auditining again as a transfer. So, all told between her auditions the first time and the second, she has probably auditioned for about 20 programs across the country. She would rate the UCLA audition in the top bunch of auditions in terms of information provided, organization, and the quality of the audition process. She felt the dance audition was one of the more difficult ones she did (and loved it.) As a transfer, she won’t hear from them for a few weeks, but is hoping for the best.
