USC or UCLA

I have been accepted to USC Marshall Business School for their Accounting Major for Spring 2013. And UCLA for Math/Econ joint major for fall 2012. I have less than a week to decide, I have made a pros and cons list and just can't decide, I realize I will be going to a great school either way, just looking for some input. I am a transfer and would be living in the dorms because I want the college experience and let's face it community college is a joke in that aspect.

First of all: there is no one “college experience,” and having one doesn’t mean you have to live in the residence halls. In fact, the vast majority of college students do not live in residence halls; they commute from home to colleges nearby where they live. That is the most common college experience in the U.S.

That aside, you have not given us enough information to help you make this decision.

-Do you want to be an accountant, or are you simply more broadly interested in business?
-What will each school cost you? Do you have more financial aid at one than the other?
-Have you visited? What’s your vibe at either school?

USC would do a better job of giving you the “college experience.” And Marshall would probably do a good job of getting you a job after graduation. How’s the price look? Do both cost the same?

Also, my advice is don’t stay in the dorms. All of the transfers i’ve met who have hated it there. (i tried to, but passed the deadline, so had to get an apartment) Stay in an off-campus apartment. It’s much more fun, and it’s easier through throw parties. (it’s cheaper too.)

i didn’t give info because I don’t want people trying to decide for me based on what they think is best for me, I want some opinions on these two schools to see if I am missing something. I have visited both, researched plenty, just want some personal opinions or facts on each school.

I decided to enroll at USC for my PhD in biosciences. I definitely would’ve chosen UCLA over USC if I had gotten an interview and been accepted, because UCLA is a bit better in the sciences/research area. However, USC is on the uprise and continues to hire great faculty even in tough economic times, so I am very happy to start there.

For undergrad and business however, USC is an absolute no-brainer. The Trojan family network/alumni can almost guarantee you employment after college. The only advantage to UCLA is that it’s truly located in “LA” - that is, Hollywood, West LA, Santa Monica, etc. I have to live in Alhambra/Pasadena to go to USC/Keck School of Medicine and it’s not as LA-ish because it’s closer to East LA.

Business - USC

Which major (accounting versus math/economics) interests you more, and if there are significant cost differences, look like the big factors in your choice here.

The fact that you got into USC for the spring and UCLA for the fall brings up another question: would you consider the spring transfer a plus or minus? For example, would the spring start be an opportunity for you to take a few more desired courses at community college, or work to save up more money, or would it be an uninteresting waiting period before you start on upper division college journey?
