I'm interested in IR, business, government, that type of thing.
What are the pros and cons of USC and UCLA and why should I pick one over the other. I am positive that I can get into both, possibly with scholarships.

Are you in-state? Is money an issue?

Personally, if all things are equal I would pick USC. I think large public schools are a little overrated for undergrad (USC would have more geographic diversity, smaller classes, etc).

if your instate, and money is an issue... then UCLA hands down

if you are oos, then Id pick USC

I'm from Oklahoma and I'm middle class, so money is a big issue.

Then UCLA will be a problem. They give almost no aid to OOS students. USC will probably be a good bet for merit aid if you have high stats. Automatic half-tuition scholarship for NMSF.

If your interested in Business, I assume you already know that USC has a undergrad business program (Marshall), and UCLA does not.

Being an OOS applicant, you might want to consider whether you would really want to go to UCLA, which is ~95% CA students. USC is roughly 50% OOS. USC is generally pretty generous w/ financial aid.

USC gives a big payoff to NMF

Why does everyone on this thread use "your" as a contraction for "you are"? The correct spelling is "you're". I hope you don't make this mistake in your college essays. Spellchecker won't catch it.

But, I agree with the posters that USC has more going for it than UCLA. The only thing UCLA has better is the neighborhood and the in-state cost.

in-state: UCLA hands down.
out-of-state: Still UCLA.

UCLA is a stronger school even in academics. If you are in-state, then, really, the only reason you might choose USC over UCLA is if you care about your class sizes, but otherwise, UCLA tops USC in basically everything: more top 10 academic programs, social life in surrounding area, better location and campus by far.

I heard the USC campus was beautiful though.

ricegal-- get over yourself

and yes shirley, USC's campus is beautiful

IR and business... AND you're OOS.

I'd pick USC. FOR SURE.

PEER ASSESSMENT
UCLA 4.3 USC 3.9

USC is perhaps the most improved school in the USNWR Top 50 over the past decade. Statistically, USC seems to have the advantage in most measured categories. However, as the OP has indicated a sensitivity to cost, the UCLA advantage is considerable, even for an out-of-state student. But for UCLA's advantage in the subjective Peer Assessment (4.3 to 3.9), USC would almost certainly rank ahead in the USNWR survey. Both are terrific schools and offer an excellent combination of academics, social life, athletic life and warm weather.

Wow. Thank you

Anyone else?
