Undergraduates taking graduate courses is not nearly as common as many people think. It’s quite common for undergraduates to take mixed undergraduate/graduate courses, of course, but those are quite different in nature and difficulty. An undergraduate taking a purely graduate-level course almost invariably requires the permission of the instructor and advisor; often the permission of at least one dean is also required. That said, a well-prepared student is usually not denied such a request.</p>
