So I have narrowed down my options for college to:
1.USC 10k scholarship
2.Emory no scholarship
3.MSU brought down my tuition to instate and gave me a job as a research assistant
4.SMU gave me a 17.5k scholarship.... should be somewhat negotiable
5.CU Boulder instate..... kinda threw that one in
6.University of Denver 19k scholarship

There it is. I was expecting alot more options with a 2270 SAT and ranked top 4 in my class, but oh well. I am very happy to get into USC! I visited USC, but their group tours were booked. I will be going back next week for the admitted student program. Oh, and I want to go to medical school and will be majoring in biology and possibly a double in some business major.... so where should I go? Money isnt too big of an issue, though it is still a factor.

Emory and USC are for the most part considered equal prestige wise, despite Emory having a bit of an edge on the USnews rankings. However, they seem to be different in a few aspects.

USC: more than double the size, more relaxed, located in LA! larger selection of majors (if you are still undecided), Division I sports (might be a positive for you, might be a negative).
Emory: much more intimate, BEAUTIFUL (trust me, I visited), located in Atlanta! better student to faculty ratio, Divisions III sports (once again, might be a positive, might be a negative; depends on your personality and interests).

I can’t help with the others, but hopefully my post will assist a little bit.

thanks again guys. My family will not meet the financial aid requirements. Our EFC is too high… again, we can afford it-- but I want to save money if possible.
Anyone else?

I’m obviously very biased since I go to USC but USC is a great school. Campus is great. They are constantly building and you can see progress at the university every year. Acceptance rate dropped to 18% (4 percent less than last year) so they are obviously doing something right. You mentioned business as a possible major. They have a very solid business program (i’m currently doing Comp Sci and Business). As for medical I’m not to sure. I know they have their own hospital/medical campus in downtown but as for the undergraduate degree I am not to sure. USC or Emory for sure. If school spirit is your thing, its huge at USC. If you have any questions specific to USC just ask. Did I mention that LA is awesome? I thought I’d throw that in there

LA is awesome, and USC definitely has more school spirit.
That being said, Emory’s undergraduate is superior in both business and medical, if you are going into either of those.

@usctroj: The only reason acceptance dropped is because of the advent of the common app… Applications skyrocketed because it suddenly became very easy to apply. Don’t expect a lower acceptance rate next year.
Nonetheless, Emory’s acceptance rate is a bit higher. I believe it is expected to hover around 20% this year.

As you may or may not know, the ranking of your undergraduate school doesn’t make a big difference when applying to medical schools. The most important things are GPA, science GPA, MCAT score, and EC’s. Thus, comparing arbitrary rankings is not the most important consideration (many will argue that it is not important at all).

You should be looking for the school you’d do the best at because: you are happy, you can get high grades, the pre-med advising is excellent, and there are numerous opportunities to get in med school EC’s.

You should also choose a school you’d be happy at if you change your mind like 50% of pre-meds eventually do. Would you want to be at USC/Emory if you were not a pre-med??

USC has excellent pre-med advising and opportunities for pre-med students. Check out the pre-med advisement Facebook page:

USC or Duke or UVA? Would love to hear from any Narrative Studies majors at USC re the program, quality of academics, and quality of life at USC in general. We’re east coasters, so this is big decision.

^^ If you create your own post, collegeorama, you’d more likely get help from the people you want to hear from. Most will read the OP’s questions and respond to his/her questions :)
