1: Is it better to wait until senior year AP score reports arrive in July before attending orientation so class selection is more accurate? If not, what do advisors do in assisting you with choosing courses if AP credits/waiving some GE's cannot be determined?

2: Do students who attend later orientation sessions have less priority in course selection than other students?

3: Do a lot of students bring their parents?

4: Are all selections made with your academic advisor set in stone or tentative? Do they go over your transcript with you?

You shouldn’t wait until you’re AP scores come in to attend orientation before applying. If you look on the USC Office of Articulation, there should be a list of AP courses that if you got a 4 or 5, will waive your GE Category 1 or 3. Advisors will ask you what you potentially think you got on a test you take your senior year, and they will advise you to take a prerequisite according to that. If anything, you can register for a course at orientation, and then when you get your AP scores, you can always change a class over the summer when you’re at home.

No. A certain number of slots per class are held for each orientation session. An example would be, say a class has 70 seats, 10 seats will be held for each Orientation session. Furthermore, the registration system is closed to the entire university except for orientees at that session, that day.

Bringing parents is a personal choice. There are many informative sessions for parents in the likes of financial aid, student panels, adjusting to college life, meeting with deans/advisors. It’s up to you. I would say 70% of parents come, but if parents dont come, students do just fine on their own.

The advisors will advise in a group setting a possible course of action for most of your major. Then they will break it down individually if you want them to discuss which courses you are interested in taking. Once you’re registered, you’re registered for the class, but you can go on the registration site yourself anytime after Orientation to change a class as you please.

Orientation begins the day 1 at around 7:15, where students are allowed to begin checking in. Day 2 ends at approximately around 4-5pm depending on how big the student’s major is and how long registration takes.
