USC Phi Beta Kappa Undergraduate Awards

<p>Two undergraduate students will receive the Phi Beta Kappa Undergraduate Award. Jason Kehe has excelled in a range of activities. He is a Trustee Scholar with a major in digital journalism at Annenberg and two minors in neuroscience and cinematic arts. At SC Jason was senior arts editor for Neon Tommy and art critic for the Daily Trojan. He has written published articles for The Jewish Journal and the Los Angeles Times. He earned 10 bylines, including a front page feature for the Calendar section. Jason also has been a contributor to Los Angeles Magazine.</p>

<p>Lauren Yu-Lien Maldonado is the second recipient of the Phi Beta Kappa Undergraduate Award. Lauren is a USC Presidential Scholar and was accepted for the Baccalaureate/M.D. program. She is double majoring in biological sciences and art history. Last year she participated in the Dornsife Problems Without Passports course, through which she studied global health issues at Oxford University. She has also studied abroad in Florence. </p>

<p>Lauren has been active at SC as a volunteer at the LAC=USC Medical Center, co-founded the Send-a-Smile organization, directed special programs for USC Troy Camp and was co-director of community service for SC Outfitters.</p>

<p>Other academic interests have been lead research assistant in publishing an educational database on Veronica Franco, a 16th century Venetian poet. Lauren speaks Spanish, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese.</p>

<p>Phi Kappa Phi has selected Kelly Paul to receive a Phi Kappa Phi Undergraduate Award.
Kelly is earning her BFA at the USC School of Theatre. She has already been honored with the governor’s California Art Scholar Award, the state’s highest recognition for a student in the arts.</p>

<p>Kelly has served as scenic designer for plays produced in the 2011 New Works Festival and designed sets for Dangereuses and Vieux Carre. She works in the scene shop at the USC School of Theatre. Outside of the university Kelly has served as an intern in the art department for Deal or No Deal and America’s Got Talent. She is interested in drawing and watching classic cinema.</p>

<p>Brendan Ryan is the second recipient of the Phi Kappa Phi Undergraduate Award. He is pursuing a degree in flute performance at the Thornton School of Music. Brendan co-founded the Flutes of Troy, a group that performs for young children. He and the group created Music and Sports, which won first prize in the 2010 Thornton Outreach Chamber Ensemble Competition. The ensemble performed an arrangement of Mozart for Classical KUSC.</p>
