Any philosophy majors out there? I'm curious about the experience you've had so far and what you liked or disliked. How hard would you say it is to do well as a philosophy major? Thanks a lot for your help!

I’m not a Phil. Major at USC, but i am at UCLA. While i can’t comment on the quality of the professors or students, Mudd Hall is one of the most amazing philosophy libraries i’ve ever been to (it destroys UCLA’s small tiny one)

The Mudd Hall philosophy library is my favorite place to go study, because it just feels so like a library. It’s old, and it feels a bit stuffy, and there are stained glass windows, a vaulted ceiling, tiny alcoves, and shelves and shelves of books.

i love that library. too bad i didn’t find out about it until senior year o_O lol

i remember just walking through the stacks and picking up random books ranging from Augustine’s Confessions to Immanuel Kant’s CoPR to some random book, i believe, on Philosophy of Biology. It’s a really well-furnished library.

Rising senior in philosophy and music here. Philosophy is a very strong graduate program here and Scott Soames, the department chair, is doing very well for the department, but their interest isn’t really in their undergraduates. They spend very little effort on undergrad mentorship or getting their students into grad school. That’s fair enough, because there are very few bright students interested in philosophy in the program; most people use it as pre-law (though with the Philosophy, Politics, and Law program, there are fewer of those–and even fewer going into the major). Your mileage may vary, but most of the bright philosophy students I know are frustrated by the program. The library is fantastic, but it’s not really the most important part of a major; it’s an 8-class adjunct to whatever else you do. Double major if you’re going to take philosophy, and if you’re considering going into the profession, consider going somewhere else and coming back here for grad. I’m incredibly passionate about the field, and I would absolutely study philosophy again, but USC didn’t really help me do it.

Chai how hard would you say it was to do well in your different philosophy classes?
