USC Scholarship results notification date?

I think I will be almost as ecstatic as I was last Sunday during the Packers game if I get something in the mail from USC. It would quite possibly be the best week of my life then (until I arrive at University Park ;)).

Kev,
How did the Yale interview go? Do you feel confident?

My income for 2010 was about $22,000 with no assets. Any idea if I will be eligible for full aid? I will also have $10,000 in my savings for when I move to California (hopefully USC), which would be primarily for living expenses (rent, food, etc…) So would I have to show that on the CSS?

Funny story, it turns out my Yale interview is this Sunday instead. When I was looking at the e-mail my interviewer sent me, the first four dates were from (now) the past week, and the last date was the Sunday on which I selected my interview. I assumed it was in the same week as the other dates.

Then again, I must be an idiot. Who in this state would schedule a interview on the same date as one of the biggest Packers games in the history of the team? I can’t believe I didn’t realize that :)

Also with Lupe Fiasco’s next single - Words I Never Said - being released next Tuesday and SUPER BOWL XLV on the ensuing weekend…forget best week, this may be the best two week stretch of my life! I’ve already ordered my Aaron Rodgers Super Bowl jersey, hopefully it’ll get here before the big game.

MDG099, Be sure to file the CSS/Profile and FAFSA by February 2nd, 2011 (the deadline is the same for transfer applicants) and submit your tax returns as soon as possible. You can use the *Institutional Method *calculator available at the College Board website to get a rough estimate of how much you may be expected to contribute. More info here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/839970-faq-usc-financial-aid-2010-a.html</a> including links to the USC financial aid website.

MOST important: Do NOT miss deadlines!

Alamemom, if I’m not expecting to receive any aid, then the FAFSA/CSS is not necessary, correct? Would there be any advantage to filling either out (other than the FAFSA loans)? Thanks.

@alamemom

based on your experience, how good is USC FA on meeting the EFC on FAFSA? Mine was around 17000. With a national merit finalist scholarship as well… would I end up paying only around 17k a year? that would be awesome! :)

thanks

More info for MGD099 - you list your age as 22 on your profile. If that is accurate, financial aid applicants under age 24 are required to provide parent info on the CSS/Profile and FAFSA in addition to your own when applying for aid. (This is a standard financial aid requirement - not a USC requirement.) So your $22,000 income + assets and your parents’ income + assets will be considered when calculating aid.

BigKev, no - other than the Stafford and PLUS loans, there would be no advantage to completing the forms if you are sure your EFC is $50,000+. (USC merit scholarships do not take need into consideration.) If later on you would like to take Stafford loan (max $5,500 freshman year) or your parents are interested in a PLUS loan (up to COA), you can fill out the FAFSA later - you don’t have to worry about the Feb 2 deadline.

Wow, how do you get such lower EFC’s? If you don’t mind would you give a rough range of your income stat? Only if you don’t mind. What amazes me is that my family is not too well off, but my EFC is essentially just the cost of attendance at a more expensive school (like Columbia University). I’ve read stories about how people with millions saved have gotten almost $4,000 a year. How is it that I would get less in aid? This seems so weird to me…

Cool. Hopefully by the end of this week I’ll find out if I can get some kind of merit scholarships to take the load off of my parents. $50K+ a year for four years is very steep. And to make matters worse, my brother is going to enter college as I leave, so they won’t get any benefit from having 2 children in college.

Hmmm… this fun waiting-for-admission-letter thread is turning into a financial aid thread… I’ll answer one more, then please put any further financial aid questions on the Fin Aid FAQ - it is lurking near the top of the forum right now so it is easy to find.

riceisnice, USC only uses the FAFSA to distribute Federal aid such as Stafford Loans, Pell Grants and Federal Work/Study. Those items add up to, at most, $11,000 - $15,000 per year. With a COA of ~$55,000, that does not come close to covering your costs at USC. USC uses the **CSS/Profile **to distribute USC Grants, and it considers assets the FAFSA does not - such as home equity - so the amount you are expected to contribute may differ from your FAFSA EFC (and by “differ,” I mean it will probably be more).

Further info on the Fin Aid FAQ - read the first few pages for answers to LOTS of questions!

^^^ Funnyman, I don’t believe assets are weighted that heavily in the EFC equation. So a family with millions saved could possibly have an EFC of around $45K if their parents are retired or for some other reason are pulling in an income that doesn’t typically correlate with their assets.

Yes it is accurate, however I am independent and have the proper documentation to prove so. I have received independent status from all the colleges I’ve applied to. Also, my fafsa is already submitted, I only need too submit the CSS now. I should have that submitted by tomorrow.

Though the topic doesn’t seem to be the status changes right now…
I just received an email from DHL saying that they’re sending a package to me from USC (I am an international applicant)…Would this be the acceptance package? I checked the name that was used for tracking and it has PRESIDENTIAL in it, so would that be which scholarship USC is considering me for? Any international applicant out there that has the same thing?

I feel so paranoid about this >.<

Congrats , in advance. Most probably it is what you are looking forward to.Acceptance Package containing Presidential scholarship , admission notification certificate and invitation for session.
Can you share your stats?

Congratulations Mirage!

Anyone else have speculation about whether scholarship candidates will find out online or through mail first? I know there’s hype about status changes and whatnot but with this new status coming out this year… idk.

Hello mirage,
We’re in the same boat (I’m an international applicant too) ! I just received my email notification from DHL last night - pretty exciting. But I don’t recall seeing the word ‘Presidential’ (or ‘Trustee’ for that matter) written anywhere on the name used for tracking !! Could there be anybody else in a similar situation to clarify ?
Thanks…

@Ssur92 - I basically clicked on ‘Get Notified’ on the top and checked all the boxes…then a few hours later I got an email, and it had this bit that isn’t on the actual tracking page, with a bit saying Description: PRESIDENTIAL (some random number that I don’t remember)…so that was how I found out. I think you should just do what someone did in another thread, go on the USC RSVP page (https://esdweb.esd.usc.edu/resrsvp/ExploreRsvp.aspx</a>), then when you click ‘reserve’ for the first event, it’ll tell you which scholarship you’re being considered for.

You are the first student to post about an acceptance. Yes, that packet is an acceptance! Letters of regret are sent the very end of March so all are notified by April 1, 2011.

The Presidential Scholarship requires an interview. This scholarship is worth over $80,000+.
It goes up if there is any rise in tuition.

Best wishes!

So… I think I’m following this thread but just to be clear. Online statuses on USConnect are now changing IF you are receiving a scholarship package??? And the scholarship package means you ARE accepted to USC and you MIGHT receive a scholarship?
