Hi, so I'm a Canadian student, and I'm doing the IB. My scores are predicted to be in about the 34-36 category and I've gotten 7s film plus I've done an internship, received a lot of awards for film and I've got a pretty broad portfolio. I've also made films in Kenya, Israel, Jordan... a lot of places and I know I have the passion. I also am a pretty good writer.
My SAT score is around an 1800 - not spectacular I know. But what do you think my chances are of getting in? I know how competitive USC is so I really want to know... I couldn't see myself going anywhere else

USC: Reach

Is that a yes?

Admission to SCA is very different than general admission to USC. You may receive more useful information on the USC forum [University of Southern California - College Confidential](University of Southern California - College Confidential Forums) than on the Chances forum. Try posting there.

Good luck.

Thank you! :)

But you still need to be academically competitive for USC first… try the ACT if you can. If so, aim for 31+.

I thought the ACT was for people who wanted to go for science/business courses

USC Cinematic Arts accepts both SAT and ACT.

If you are rejected by USC, you can always get 3.6+ at the college you will ultimately attend and then transfer into USC (for something other than film; film is extremely hard to transfer into).

First, alamemom is correct, ask this on the USC page here on CC, there are a lot of knowledgeable people on that board who can give guidance.

Second, ACT vs SAT is up to the applicant. Some people do better on one versus the other. There is no relationship between the test submitted and the major or school you’re looking to pursue.

Third, catria is correct. Even if you’re applying to an audition/portfolio based major you still have to be ‘in the neighborhood’ grades and scores-wise. From what I know of IB programs 34-36 is a very good score so that should cover grades. Your SAT is low but that may be ‘overlooked’ if your portfolio is strong enough.

That said, Cinematic Arts at USC is like applying for engineering at MIT, you’re going to be up against the very best. I know one student with multiple film awards who was rejected because of grades/test scores. Yours appear stronger than his so hopefully your chances are better.
