My son (class of 2018) was an IMGD hopeful within SCA, rejected from that major but accepted to USC as undeclared. (Second choice was CS Games but Viterbi doesn’t evaluate second choice). He was also a Spring admit. After one semester in Dornsife, he transferred to Viterbi and is currently a Junior with CS Games as his major and Game Audio as a minor.
My daughter just got into UMiami for Film, but I suspect that she will rank it below UTexas among the other admits… and below FSU MPA and USC SCA if those become admissions too. But UMiami just randomly emailed without warning. We wish USC would just do that lol
@WWWard congrats to your daughter!
@wwward aren’t those kind of admissions the best! Congrats - she has a lot of choices, but just needs “the one.” Good thoughts all around.
Congrats to your daughter @WWWard ! We loved Miami when we went to visit. When do you hear from FSU?
Thanks, @TheatreGoddess @CADREAMIN @filmstudent2
We suspected that FSU MPA would not announce their 20 until they finished the final interviews of the remaining group (45 interviewed in total), but apparently at least one applicant (who interviewed with my daughter) got in on Sunday. So I guess that some may have already heard. But they try to manage the process so that they end up with only 20 freshmen enrolled in total. That likely means some admits, some commitments, more admits, etc. I guess we could hear at any time, but I suspect that the bulk will hear after Saturday.
Even with a scholarship offering, UMiami is very expensive too… so that is another factor. C’mon SCA lol
@WWWard Isn’t USC more money than Miami? I thought it was…
My son got a nice scholarship to Miami but not one dime to Emerson…
@TheatreGoddess UMiami total cost of attendance: $66K. USC total cost of attendance: $69K. So fairly close. Private schools can be pricey. She too got a nice scholarship offer from UMiami. We had heard the same story in previous years about NYU and Emerson, that they tend not to offer much money, which is one reason she did not even apply to either.
@WWWard My middle child graduated NYU drama so I know what you mean! Ouch. My son didn’t apply there, it is not a good fit for him.
Emerson can be affordable for top students because if you get into the honors program it’s a 50% scholarship! My son did the essay but did not get chosen for honors, which we weren’t surprised about because he’s not a stellar student… good, but not the tippy top. Emerson is still one of his top choices because it is by far the best film program he applied to ( other than USC) and he LOVES Boston. We are going to accepted students day in April.
It’s going to be a hard choice. U of Miami has the gorgeous medium sized campus, an incredibly diverse student body, great sports, and a good communications/film program- but it does not compare to Emersons class offerings in film production and Miami is a ba not a bfa. USC sca is the only school that has both! But I really don’t think he’s getting in. As much as they say it’s more of an art program and not all about grades and scores, I’m finding that hard to believe. The kids that have gotten in on cc seem to be incredible students. And being a white, male from NY is not going to help him much.
@TheatreGoddess Well at least he has two solid choices to choose from already. But, Boston and Miami could not be more different city-wise… and weather-wise. And as you describe, the same applies to Emerson and UMiami. From what you told me before, I would suspect that UMiami would be the better overall fit as it hits the mark in terms of all of the other criteria he is looking for in terms of the overall college experience. But, of course, Boston is closer to NY. Then again, that may be another reason a son/daughter would pick FL
While my daughter has friends at UMiami, I think she just really wants to leave FL. Plus, she too is looking for that overall college experience, which is why she only applied to USC, Stanford, UTexas, Yale and FSU among the Hollywood Reporters’ Top-25 film schools. UTexas and UMiami provide that goal, as would FSU, if she can gain the other half of their admission process (the important part). She really wants USC… but the closer it gets to Saturday (decision day for us in FL), the more she is already mentally hedging her bets. Right now… that means preparing for Austin and wondering about Tallahassee… while still hoping for L.A.
@WWWard Your daughter is so lucky to have you as a mother. Neither of my parents understood this process to such an extent or really understand film school this much even after I’ve applied.
Thanks, @CathJR … but a dad, not a mom. Funny how everyone always assumes mom though
@WWWard So sorry haha! She’s still so lucky!
No worries, @CathJR Thanks again…
Decisions have been mailed, good luck to everyone!
And to you, .@filmstudent2
Living in the Mid-West…This waiting is like the calm before the storm/tornado. Just ready for the sunshine! My daughter’s 18th bday is Sunday and man am I hoping for her happiness. I know she’ll be fine and has lots of good opportunities, but she has her heart set on USC. Good luck everyone!
(I think Im going to have to ban myself from the computer till Sunday…oh and get out of the house, so I don’t attack the postman!)
Tennessee seems like a 3-day letter ride for my girl! This weekend is her big senior night at her school, she’s up for most talented, and focused on her performance right now. I’m pretty sure she doesn’t even know the letters were mailed! She knows this is an EXTREME long shot, so she’s not banking on it. She has other acceptances with awesome scholarships in her pocket, but they are in NYC. Her dream is to be in CA, and I think she will end up there eventually. It would be nice to be able to start in the state where she wants to end up! Good luck everyone!!!
I think everyone should head over to @uscadmissions on Instagram and watch their IG Story, it was weirdly comforting.
@filmstudent2 was admitted today and to CMS at SCA… so congrats to her. Any other SCA admits today?
