***USC School of Cinematic Arts (Class of 2022 Discussion/Results)***

Hey guys! The deadline for SCA was three days ago, so I decided to start this discussion.
I’m nervous, but excited also!!
If anyone wants to dm me and become friends, we can talk about sca and things like that!! :slight_smile: already made one friend haha

I thought I’d reactivate this!! hey guys! its getting closer and closer to results! Does anyone know how many merit scholarships that SCA gives out?

hey! I applied too and I’m anxiously waiting for results!

Hi everyone! I applied to USC SCA as an international student from Italy and I’m honestly so nervous! Good luck to everyone!

when are the results coming out anyone know??

My son applied for the Interactive Game Design program in the SCA, which we know is extremely competitive. He was accepted into LMU’s Film School for Animation, but doesn’t want to commit until he knows about USC. Not sure about the number of merit scholarships for SCA, but from other threads, it looks like notifications start coming out around the 3rd Friday/4th Monday of the month, so by the end of next week, those receiving merit scholarships will have heard. Good luck to all hoping for those! My son’s GPA is okay (3.4), so we’re sure he won’t be on the receiving end of a merit scholarship; he is hoping his portfolio is good enough to secure his admittance to the program.

Good luck to all those applying to SCA this cycle. Yes… it is super-competitive, with acceptance rates ranging from 2-11% or so - depending on the major - (vs 16% for USC overall). But there is also the internal transfer option available for many SCA degrees too. For example, my daughter applied last year with SCA majors listed for both her first and second choice majors. She was admitted to USC, but only Undeclared. So she was not immediately admitted to any SCA program. She then applied again in July, even before arriving in August, to internal transfer to SCA starting Spring 2018 and was admitted in October. So she spent one USC freshman semester as Undeclared and is now a CMS major within USC SCA this term. In Bryan Singer’s case, it took him three tries to finally get in to SCA. So… persistence can pay off and be finally rewarded. Of course, Spielberg also tried three times and failed each time… proving that ultimate success can come regardless of where you attend film school. Again… good luck…

Hey everyone!! I also applied to SCA! So so nervous as it is getting closer to scholarship notification date. I was reading a cc thread and saw that SCA had about 20 scholarship finalists / January admits last year. This number is so intimidating; we can only hope for the best. Don’t think I’ve ever been more nervous in my life. Fingers crossed!!

@s0meUSCkid95 "In recent years, the film school’s freshman yield has been in the 75-85% range. I think that SCA and the new Dance school currently have the highest yield rates at the university.

And of course you’re right, all of the schools need to admit more than they’re looking to enroll. I know that SCA has a general sense of how many they want in each of their programs, but I get the sense that there’s a little flexibility because the enrolled numbers aren’t exactly the same each year. Also when you factor-in internal transfers and also external transfers, there seems to be some play in the system.

Last year, a little over 200 freshmen were accepted into the Cinema School, and this year only around 20 have gotten in at this point, so there are still probably around 175-180 admissions spots available.

Good luck to your daughter. I hope she gets in!"

Best of luck to you all!! :slight_smile:

Did anyone get in this week?

Yes, my senior was admitted to SCA with opportunity to interview for Trustee Scholarship.

@ventri Congrats! Only 20 were so fortunate last year… so quite an accomplishment.

Thank you @WWWard! Tears of joy when we received the white box. And a special thank you to you for all the information you’ve provided to everyone, it has been invaluable.

You’re welcome @ventri

@ventri Congrats, that’s amazing!! What major?

A student at DS high school received the white box- her major is screenwriting.

I was reading the threads from last year, and is getting a Skype call with a professor a good sign? obviously USC is considering you, but it means you’re borderline right? and do people who have interviews usually get rejected or accepted?

@curiousgirl123

There has been a lot of speculation over the years regarding the issue of SCA interviews because many do get in without every being interviewed and many also get rejected without ever being interviewed. Also, many who are interviewed still do not get in. Some have speculated that professor-requested interviews are primarily for those applicants that may be “on the bubble” or where clarifications may be deemed warranted via the faculty requesting the interviews.

With SCA, the acceptance rate is only in the 2-11% range anyhow, depending on the major, so 89-98% get rejected (again, depending on the major) any way you look at it. But these are creative majors and so much of that holistic review process is entirely subjective. A good interview could of course aid your efforts.

I would be inclined to think of it as a good thing… or at least as one more opportunity to put your best case forward.

Good Luck

does anyone know the amount of film production USC accepts annually?

@prepro986

As I have heard & read here on CC prevously… the admitted #s to account for projected yield are around 75 for Cinema and Media Studies, 50 for production, 12 for IMGD, 15 for Screenwriting and 24 for animation. In general, the SCA admit rate is perceived to be only 4-6% or so admitted for production, but I have also heard the wider range of 2-11%, depending on the major, for SCA overall. IMGD & Writing are closer to 2%. CMS is closer to 11%.

Good luck…

We were told film production has a 4% admit rate.
