USC School of Theater!

Hello! I have been accepted to USC (BA in Theater) and am VERY excited! Just wondering who else out there has heard back already (BA or BFA) and if anyone has any information about the program.

Congratulations!

My daughter is a sophomore BFA and has quite a few friends who are BA’s - Please feel free to pm me. Musicalstudent posts a lot about the BA program on this forum and in the USC forum too.

Congrats again!

did you hear by email or regular mail regarding your acceptance

It was sent in the mail, received it on monday

what was your status before you received your package on monday? was that your first clue, the mail, or did your online account give you any indication (back door method, status change, etc.??)

I had absolutely no idea I was accepted until the mail
came actually. I do not think there was an online status change but I might be mistaken

That is soo great! Congratulations!!! :)

Congratulations!! I’m a freshman BA theatre (acting emphasis) and musical theatre minor. As actingmom said, I’m always posting stuff so if you have any questions about the program or life at USC in general, feel free to shoot them my way!

I’m copying this reply I just made to a guy over on the USC Forum who told what his stats were and then asked what people thought of his chances of getting into the USC Theater program (BA). Here’s my reply to him; what do you guys think about the whole “offers and counteroffers” stuff I was told???

Hi dj,
I auditioned for theater, as did you. The GPA and SAT/ACT scores aren’t a very big deal for those of us trying to get into the theater program. The audition is everything. You should follow the Theater/Drama Majors forum here on CC, and read all the stuff on USC there. There have only been two acceptances so far. ONLY TWO!! So for theater, it’s not getting late at all. I actually spoke to someone in the theater department about two weeks ago, and she told me that “we will be making offers to our top choices first; then we have counteroffers; then we make our way down our list. It takes awhile, but we will notify by April 1.” I didn’t want to be a pest and ask for a detailed explanation about “offers” and “counteroffers,” so I just said thanks and let her go. I had actually phoned about something else, so I only wanted to take minimal time asking about when we would hear from them. If they want us, it will be because of our audition. Then they run it by Admissions to make sure our stats don’t keep us out. But I gotta say, that stuff about offers and counteroffers threw me for a loop. I have never, never read anything on CC about that! I wonder how it is that they “negotiate” their way to a full class.

There are many here who are actively involved in the USC School of Theatre. I have never heard of such a procedure. On Facebook there is an entire list of students from around the country who have been admitted to the School of Theatre. Students on CC are only a tiny segment of students who apply to colleges.

It is not always a good idea to think that everything written on the internet is factual.

I am an undergraduate freshman working at the Drama Center (Admissions Office) at USC. I am not sure who gave you that information but I want to assure you that it is false. One of our jobs at the drama center is to process applications and make sure auditions are organized and send out letters. I’ve never heard of these counter offers and it is not how USC runs things, I can assure you (and anyone else reading this board). USC SOT has no way of giving “offers” or “counter offers.” We accept people based on their grades AND audition. USC admissions (not the school of theatre) contacts some for an interview for the Presidential or Trustee scholarship based on their GRADES. The admissions team then collaborates and decides who receives the scholarship based on their interview. It is then up to the student to decide whether or not they would like to come to USC. If they decline, that is the end of it.

An audition counts a lot but it is NOT “everything.” The rest of the application materials and academic profile DO count.

After reading what you guys wrote today, I’ll assume it was a student assistant who answered the phone and wanted to sound authoritative. So, it was bunk. It sure didn’t sound believable, which is why I put it on the forum.

I’ll chime in here! My daughter is a sophomore BFA. Two years ago she heard in early March, but some of her classmates did not hear until the end of March. Last year the young lady I coached was accepted the last week of March.

Everything is taken into account: your audition, gpa, test scores, ec’s, essays and recs. So, I believe, some students will make it through the admissions process a little quicker than others.

It is a great program and great school! Good luck to everyone waiting! :)

My daughter was a Theatre major at SC. The phone call that Violetsky describes is totally unlike anything that I have heard or seen. I do not know who you spoke with, but the offer/counter offer sounds like agent/casting as opposed to college acceptance. Very strange.

Acting mom,

Can you tell me more about the BA program at USC. Was your daughter very involved in the BA program? Are there many student run shows? How many shows does the theater school put on? How does the school help make the gratuating student launch into the acting on film/TV or do they leave you hanging. Sorry for all the questions trying to compare it to Northwestern University.

Hi wardrobemom I bumped another thread for you discussing NU and USC. Musicalstudent is a great source of info on the BA program. My daughter is a BFA. But here is some info that might help. 4 kids that were in her BFA class decided to go into the BA, so clearly they felt that program better suited their needs.

In my daughter’s class of 17 students, I believe 12 already have agents and managers. It is very, very difficult to juggle the BFA curriculum and go for outside auditions. It can be done - but it is not easy. I believe the BA program allows more flexibity in arranging your classes.

There is a showcase for the BFA’s, but BA’s do audition for it. But IMO I think any student who wants to get an agent will start looking for one before they graduate. Some will also already have film credits because they will have acted in films directed by students in the SC’s amazing film department.

And finally - I can tell the Trojan Family is just that, a family. The alums go out of their way to help each other find jobs and there are a lot of them in the television/film business in LA :)

Hope this helps!

wardrobemom - PM me and I’ll give you some info.

I just got the acceptance package from USC for their BA program! I’m really happy but at the same time, I wish I got accepted into the BFA program. Now I’m hesitating on whether to go since I would be paying double tuition as I am an intl student.

Congratulations! USC is a fantastic school! (though I am a tad biased ;))

why would you be paying double tuition? wouldn’t you be paying full tuition, which while it is a lot, is not double tuition? I have a few international theatre friends and I don’t think they’re paying double, though I’ve never asked them…
