I was accepted as a BFA but swtiched my major to a BMA in classical guitar. I'm thinking I might double-major w/ the BA though.... It's unlikely, but I might do it.

Does anybody know if I'm able to switch into the BFA program? If I am not accepted to the film school, I think I might want to consider the BFA program, but I know an audition is required. Does anybody know if it's possiblle to contact somebody from the program and see if i could transfer in?

wow congrats! they said they only accept 20 (?) BFA applicants each year but i applied for the BA program because i want to double major and minor. still waiting on their decision

I was accepted at USC as a BFA major! Right now though, i dont know what I am going to do if I get into NYU. I want to go into film and telivision, so I dont know if going to Tisch would be two steps back. I am majorly confused right now. NYU used to be where I wanted to go...but now i am leaning more towards USC. Has anybody heard anything about the program...I am also a bit concerned that it wont be as intense as I expect it to be...Im probably wrong though. And as a BFA major do you know how many GE or regular courses you have to take.

I was accepted as BA, but I've heard the USC BFA program is pretty strict/rigorous (one of the reasons I did BA, because I want to double major). I know that NYU automatically gives their BFA students a spot in one of the four academies (like Adler or Atlantic), but I don't know that the training you receive there does more than act as an internship. I have friends who are studying BFA in both schools and they are both extremely happy.

Does your friend at NYU want to go to go into straight theatre though, and does your friend at USC want to go into film and telivision. My biggest concern is that If I went to NYU I would be taking two steps back due to the contacts I would have missed making in LA. Because in the end I think I will end up in LA to do film and telivision.

I'd say that simply because the USC Film School is more renowned, it's easier to get connections to film through Theatre at the same school. I don't know much about film at NYU, but I know that there is a lot of collaboration between the Cinema-Television students/programs and the Theatre ones at USC.

NYU has an amazing film program (writing/directing). It's every bit as competitive as USC's. The emphasis is a little different; NYU has more of an indie bent. USC probably has more connections, but an NYU film student will be respected in L.A. as well.

But as far as an actor/actress who wants to pursure (acting for) film and telivivion in LA, would NYU be the wrong choice? I'm not talking about the film program at NYU, but rather the BFA training at both schools in comparision...and as a result would going to USC be the most proactive choice in the long run? Or would the training recieved at Tisch be invaluable...therefore that should be my choice irregardless of the New York location as opposed to LA. The close tie between the film program at USC and the acting program seems pretty cool though.

It depends what kind of BFA program you're looking for. I believe I'm correct in saying that USC focusses mostly on the drama aspect of theater, and they do not have a musical theater major. The theater department at USC is a lot smaller at NYU. Dependant on the person, this could be good or bad. More resources, experiences, and connections are probably availavble from Tisch because of its expanse offerings, but USC offers a much more concentrated and individualized program. It is really your own preference. Either school is excellent. Just stand out, and you'll do well.

OK first of all your s/n name is really wicked (LOL) cool!
If you wanna do television I'm not sure NY is where you want to be. The film biz is plenty strong in NY, though. And, of course once you are a big star, you'll have houses on both coasts :-) I guess I would suggest contacting NYU and see if you can get in touch with a current student. I'm sure that the department has students willing to email/pm prospectives. Maybe do the same for USC. keeping in mind you are only getting that person's opinions, but atleast you would have some actual info about each department beyond the typical publicity and admissions spin. that's FWIW.

Yeah I have friends in both programs, and they are both pretty biased. My friend (whose a girl) at USC seems the regular USC "type", whereas my guy friend at NYU fits New York and wants to act for the stage. Both love where they are and wouldnt trade it for the world. I am just scared of making the wrong decision and being unhappy.

NYU used to be my first choice, but after spending the summer in LA, and auditioning out there, I have learned to really like it. I'm scared that I will go to NYU and be shunned for wanting to go to LA after school and act in film. It seems that people would possibly turn down their noses at the idea...

haha- thanks, yeah I got my SN from Wicked...the musical. And it is "wicked" i guess haha.

ive been told that the best film actors have a lengthy resume in theatre also. i dont think you can go wrong. choose whatever fits your personality.

I am currently a USC undergrad freshman who works at the Drama Center there. I applied (and got in) to NYU and I am from NY. I’m majoring in Stage Management. While USC has a great connection with the film school here we do about 14 stage shows a semester. We also have about 7-8 ISPs (Independent Student Productions) each semester. We have a musical theatre minor that is 27 credits as well as dance and voice classes you can take. We do 1 musical a year and have a few ISP musicals (such as Musical Theatre Repertoire). I took classes at Strasberg and it just depends on how you want to be taught. As a theatre major I am required to take an acting class and even though acting is not what I want to go into it changed my life. The teachers here are 2nd to none so if you’re worried about the training you’ll get you have nothing to worry about. USC SOT (School of Theatre) doesn’t teach you to be a movie star, it teaches you to be an actor. Just look at our alum (Forest Whitaker, Kyra Sedgwick, etc). We also have internships that will take you all over the country (including NY if you want to study there for a summer). Another thing about NYU, is the school does not allow you to work outside of the school while you are studying while at SC we have students who get there SAG and Equity cards while they are still in school. It’s also a great way to build up your resume.

On another note, you asked about home many classes you have to take outside of SOT. With the BFA you will have about 84 credits in the SOT out of your 128 credits for the full school. You have 8 GE classes you have to fulfill.
