I honestly don't know, but obviously they are meant to be concise, but long enough so that you can say all that you need to mention. If it helps, both of mine were 150-160 words, which I figured was okay based on the fact that short answer essays for most other apps, like supplement essays to the common app, are 150-250 words each. For the optional essay I just put a couple of sentences explaining a certain situation that affected my education, but you don't even have to put anything for that.

thanks. does anyone else know specifically?

It says approximately a paragraph. So Im guess more like a pargaraph or two,If needed. Oh, and I wouldn’t take it lightly either, for the admissioners really look into detail what you wrote. Yep.

okay, it says in one paragraph, but they give you 35000 characters to use, which ends up being like 5 or 6 paragraphs. I don’t know which one to use!

^ thats what I’m confused about too

I thought they gave you 3500 characters?

I went to the USC open day and someone asked the same question. I couldn’t really hear the answer but it was something along the lines of enough to adequately answer the question. And if it has to be two short paragraphs then its okay too. But don’t quote me on this because I’m not sure.

Also, are there 4 short answers for ALL USC applicants? There’s only one supplement for ALL applicants and, for me, only two questions for engineering majors. :S
