Hey everyone, Ive just been admitted to USC for the spring 2013 semester. Im so grateful for this because USC is my dream school, but Im still a little worried. I'm concerned about housing and the possibility of being paired with an upperclassmen, meeting new friends, and missing out on the full college experience. But its hard for me to turn USC down because of the fabulous opportunities available to me. In the end, Im still going to get the degree, so isnt that the point? Any other spring admits in the same position? Any advice from current USC spring admits?

Hi usc2013girl,

First, congratulations on being admitted! My daughter was also admitted for Sp 2013 and at first was devastated but has realized a lot of other people are in the same boat. You have the exact same concerns she does (and as her parents, we do too). Any thoughts on what you would want to do in the fall? In a perfect world, my daughter would love to find housing somehow on/near campus, and go to a nearby cc to take some classes but still become familiar with the campus and meet people. Would get great if all you spring admits could start a fb group or something!

NorCaliM0m,

Thank you so much, and congrats to your daughter too! I think im going to stay at home and go to community college in the fall to get knock out some GE’s. My sister who went to USC said that she actually thinks it would have been easier completing her hard GE’s at a community college. A few of the spring admits have already grouped together on the USC class of 2016 facebook page. Your daughter should probably check the page out!

My D also Spring admit - USC was top choice - disappointed about Spring admit but trying to make the best of it - we live in IL but she will move to Orange Co and go to Orange Coast College in the fall (family there). She would love to connect with other Spring admits and made a FB page “USC spring admits 2013”. - i checked out FB page above but couldnt find any spring admit group

did USConnect change for the spring admits?

Yes - her USConnect changed and allows her to put down a deposit and register for events

Just wondering. did your kids apply to Fall and were given admits to Spring? My S is considering USC for next year and hubby and I are both USC grads. I am both undergrad and grad school. Does being a legacy help at all like it used to.

My daughter applied for fall - we didn’t even know getting accepted for another semester was an option, so we were pretty taken aback. Maybe the fact that both you and your hubby are legacy will help but I saw another post from a spring admit who had at least one parent who was a USC grad too. I would go ahead and apply, but have some back ups in case that happens and it’s not an option for him.

You’re lucky you have family there - that’s huge! We’re hoping to FIND some family down there so we can do the same thing, lol

Where can I find the Facebook group?

It’s hard to replace the unique freshman experience of being in a dorm. But here is my suggestion:

Move to L.A. (if you don’t live there already) in August.

Take some classes at a school like Orange Coast College, SMCC, or Pasadena City College.

Join a student organization at USC and commute there weekly to build a base of friends there.

One of my good friends was a spring admit who joined the marching band in the fall before he actually became a student. I can’t think of a better way to join the USC community.

Spring admits are allowed to join clubs in the fall? Can they get a campus ID.

Does anyone know how they decide who gets bumped up to fall? At my high school, several people were admitted, but not too many are matriculating. Does that improve my chances of being bumped up to the fall?

^ That seems to be mystery and may reflect enrollment yield within the various colleges and majors. Some past advice here in cc was to contact admissions officers and department chairs…I note in the spring admit book that it specifically says not to harass staff about your interest in being moved up to fall. I think they must safely assume that everyone who applied wants to matriculate in the fall.

I will add that I would hope denied applicants who file successful appeals are put into the spring admit pool…

Last year my daughter was admitted as a Spring Admit. We were very disappointed, however, my daughter really wanted to go to USC. During the fall my daughter was extremely sad because she was missing out on the entire new freshman experience. She decided to take classes at the community college. She had to apply to four different community colleges to get the classes she needed because of the budget cuts. When she got her freshman housing she was disappointed to find out that she her dorm wasn’t on campus and she was placed with three sophomores. She has adjusted to USC as a spring admit but it took awhile. The spring admits do miss out on a lot so you need to decide what is best for your child. Personally I would say to look at your other options. If USC is your number one choice then accept the spring admit but do try and take some classes to catch up with the rest of your class. Try and make friends as soon as you get there in January because you need to sign up for fall housing in February which can be overwhelming if you haven’t made any friends to room with. When we had orientation in December the parents voiced their concerns of being spring admits and what they were missing out on. Hopefully the administration will make some adjustments as they arrive on campus.

Hi ccmom09,
Did your daughter move to LA and go to cc’s down there or stay home (or maybe you’re a So Cal resident already)? Just curious because we are trying to figure all this out! If she did go to cc’s in LA, which ones did she go to?
Thanks!

We are from Southern California in Riverside County. We scheduled an appointment with someone from the engineering department to help figure out what classes to take at the community college to keep her on schedule. My advice to you would be to register your daughter at cc’s near home and in the LA area and see what works out better.

@ccmom09 - sounds depressing! In someways a rejection might have been better, get over it and move on. Now we just sit around praying for a bump to fall and if not, hope that it all works out. Any Spring admits going to the Admitted student day 4/28?

We are going to go down for the 4/20 Spring Admit session - my daughter has an interview for a scholarship that day and we can’t pass that up!
