USC spring admit...concerns?

^ Phone and an email.

^ Thanks. And about how long after you got the spring acceptance that you got the notification?

I think it was only about 6 weeks

Bumping up this old thread for information for new spring admits with questions and concerns about what it means to be a spring admit vs. a fall admit at USC (assuming that there will continue to be USC spring admits this session).

There are many other spring admit threads which can be found by searching this forum and Facebook groups as well.

Unlike a waitlist, this is an offer of admittance and some spring admits are offered fall positions later in the spring/summer. Others go to CCs and knock off some GEā€™s at discounted prices and join in the fun in late January.

Our D was a spring admit transfer student. She applied after her 1st semester of CC & was admitted to spring at USC, after she completed 3 semesters of CC. She got her transfer spring admit letter in late July. We were happy she could stay at nearby CC & get credits she applied to USC GE requirements and was able to take courses she really wanted as soon as she started at USC.

She had many good friends who entered fall of freshman year, as well as her older brother who was a junior there. She networked with them so that when she started in January, she had a strong support system on campus & they figured out housing in January for the following fall.

I was just accepted as a spring admit. Iā€™ve committed to enroll at USC but Iā€™m definitely already starting to get cabin fever at the idea that all of my friends will be moving out in the fall and Iā€™ll be staying home and going to CC. Iā€™m also not so wild about the idea of missing the first half of my freshman year. Iā€™m trying not to think about getting bumped because that would get my hopes up but Iā€™m also trying to figure out an affordable way to get out of my hometown for the fall. Perhaps a CC in LA, but I donā€™t know. Any advice?

Does anyone know how many Annenberg students get bumped?

Iā€™m angry at the administration for not letting all of you start in the fall. Shame on President Nikias for treating you as second class Trojans just to pander to USNEWS so that the admit rate will be artificially lower without your statistics included. And shame on the Board of Trustees for ratifying such disingenuous behavior. Iā€™m ashamed of my alma mater.

This is not the way to begin what should be one of the best years of your lives.

My advice: unless USC is your dream school, go elsewhere and enjoy your freshman yearā€¦

^ Ridiculous. Whereā€™s the hate for schools who offer 1500 applicants a place on a waitlist they will never get off of?

^Same advice for those waitlisted anywhere, go to the school that accepted you as a fall admit and move onā€¦

@FauxNomā€Œ Hi, I just admitted to USC as Spring 2015 transfer student. I read your post that your son was bumped to Fall. Would you tell me what should I do so that I could also be bumped to Fall?

^ There is nothing that you can do to be moved to fall. In May, if they had room in your department, USC would have moved you to fall matriculation. Youā€™ll attend in spring if you commit to USC, and it will also be fine.

@alohaloha Iā€™m on the same boat as you, was just admitted as a spring 2015 transfer. While at first I was bummed Iā€™ve been looking at it positively for the past few hours. Itā€™ll give you a chance to maybe internship in your field and even take a few general education classes at community college that will transfer to USC to even save you money in the long run.

You should write a very pointed letter to president Nikias expressing your disappointment in the administrationā€™s denial of your chance to experience what he did years ago at his own Athenian college. Copy your letter to the Daily Trojan editor and each member of the Board of Trustees. I can assure you none of them suffered the ignominious position they have put you in. If he does not respond, send a follow up letter. The fuddy duddies who are toying with your college experience need to be reminded of their failings and hypocrisy. You can bet Nikiasā€™ daughters werenā€™t treated this way. This is just another way in which the USC administration is waging war against the undergrads. The more you complain, the better the chances USC will end this horribly unfair treatment of spring admits. How are you supposed to attend USC football games in the spring?

@SeattleTW My son is a Spring admit and I am thrilled he was accepted. The alternative was a rejection. Although this is a different path he is taking by attending the American University in Paris in the Fall instead of USC it is still an outstanding opportunity. Not everyone feels as though football games are such a high priority nor do I feel as though he deserves the same experience as many others. We are just grateful for an admittance.

I find your response here and in other threads very disconcerting. You seem so angry and prestige hungry. Donā€™t you have something more constructive to do with your time?

I am so glad my mom let me make all college decisions on my own. She would never dare try to speak for me or on my behalf on this site, and I would disable her access if she tried. I love you Mom! My father also knows better, love you too, Dad!

CC really needs a page devoted to Mothers of College Students. That way you can all share your thoughts among the bevy of likeminded mothers. Iā€™d pay to see the vigorous debates that most certainly would erupt on such a site.

I wonder what your boy really feels about missing out on what should be a great fall experience.

It is my sons opinion I am expressing. He chose his list of colleges, completed his apps himself and made the final decision. You know nothing about me and my involvement. And you know nothing about my son other than what I have shared on CC. You seem to think that all students (and parents) should have the same opinion as you do and if they donā€™t then you cry foul. My son could care less about football. He has never been to a game and doesnā€™t even know the rules.

USC does not owe him the same experience as everyone else. I donā€™t recall ever hearing any kind of guarantee from them.

Lol, again, Iā€™m wondering how your boy truly feels about being booted to the spring semester.

Iā€™m trying to protect your boy from a USC administration that cares little about your sonā€™s and similarly situated kidsā€™ experiences as freshmen. USC owes all admitted freshmen that full experience. Youā€™re quite welcome.

And I doubt you know whether heā€™d enjoy hanging out with other freshmen at USC football games. You have no idea what heā€™s missing out on.

My daughter met a local student who was accepted as a spring admit and was disappointed. But my daughter told her she wasnā€™t missing as much as she thought and to think of it as a limited space issue. Itā€™s so much better to come in the spring than not at all. And an even better option than a classmate who was told to wait out a year and then apply as a transfer. So your son is going to be fine. The young woman who started in the spring has integrated very well, and is having a blast and doesnā€™t feel like she was cheated or behind in any way.

Also, my daughter studied abroad and it was probably one of the best experiences of her life. The language fluency alone was well worth it. So how awesome your son is going to Paris. We bought an a unlocked international cell phone paired with a SIM card which made communication very easy. It also made it easier for her to text other students in the program. We asked our wireless company to suspend her US phone account temporarily so we werenā€™t paying for those additional charges. Our second child is now overseas with that phone and her voice is clear as a bell. Also, we made (and make) prolific use of SKYPE - so the distance doesnā€™t seem as great.

Your son will come back to USC with such a great perspective relative to the thousands of children who havenā€™t had the chance to travel internationally. And can help answer questions for the college students considering study abroad as a future option.

Congratulations and welcome to the Trojan Family!
