Congrats Spring Admits! Opening up this thread so thoughts about spring admission could be centralized and shared. Some people are thrilled to get into USC anyway they can, and others are disappointed with the thought of missing that freshman move in and first fall at their 4 year U. Some will save money taking classes at a cc, others may work, travel, go abroad with a USC sister university or hang out. Some will say heck no and some will say heck yeah. No wrong answer!
They also have a spring term orientation, so you come in just like a new student and aren’t left to figure things out on your own. It seems many use Santa Monica CC and/or live close enough to USC so they can take part in fall football events/activities. Spring admits may purchase student section football passes. There are private owned complexes like Gateway that some live at which is right across the street. You get student housing when you start in spring, and they generally put spring admits together. Maybe you can make your first spring admits friends connecting here or on any other site that opens up about coming to USC in the spring.
Here are two links from USC and a couple CC threads from last year for more information:
They usually send out something that says please don’t ask about getting bumped - maybe it’s in the acceptance letter, I don’t recall exactly, because they absolutely know everyone wants to get bumped to fall. So as @WWWard says, it is all about a space becoming available in the right program and school that matches a spring admit’s. I remember one year hearing that 12 moved off spring to fall, likely changes every year.
So just enroll and wait is the play. At the same time, while some of us love to answer what we can here, I don’t want to ever discourage people from asking USC Admissions questions, that is what are there for. It is a logical question to want to know if you need to put your name on a list or do anything else to be bumped up. You don’t, but you only know that because you are on here. So if you want to verify with them, just call, or have a parent call anonymously if that makes you nervous.
This is from their blog:
Congratulations on your admission!! Every year we move a very small number of students from spring to fall. The only way to be considered is to submit your intent to enroll for spring which is not a commitment deposit, rather an indication that you plan to come for spring and want to also be considered for fall. I
Thank you so much, @CADREAMIN and @WWWard for your answers and diligence throughout the admissions process! I really appreciate your hard work. I guess it’s time to play the waiting game now!
Hey so if I need to contact someone about spring admit (I have a very particular major that is only open to entering/first sem freshmen) who would I ask? Would it be my admission counselor or someone else?
@solarique Admission counselor - but if that is the case, I would think you would be bumped or not have been given it in the first place. They obviously know their majors… I would be sure you know what you are talking about before you put in any requests…just sayin’
They are not a fan of “move me from spring admit to fall” requests. You can ask, but it is driven by openings in programs. What major is so rigid at USC? I can’t think of any…
@CADREAMIN Its the business in cinematic arts major. It requires a secondary application so I was admitted into the business administration in Marshall. On the website, it says “The program is available to entering or first-semester Marshall Freshmen Only.”
My D just found out she is Spring Admit to BA Theater, School of Dramatic Arts! Does anyone know about housing? Can they move into a dorm mid-year…or how does that work?
D is a Spring Admit. She has been thinking about taking a Gap Year (no matter at USC or other schools she has gotten into). I have the form to ask for a deferment from USC and it looks like she could opt for Fall of 2020 to start.
Just wondering if anyone has had first hand experience with Deferment request and USC’s typical track record in granting that request?
Does anyone know where the Spring Admit kids can find each other online? My son is considering accepting the spot, but I know he would feel better about it if he connected with other kids considering Spring as well. He is social and athletic, and doesn’t want his freshman experience to lack some of the connections that come from living in a dorm, playing sports together, etc. He would prefer to live at Gateway and take community college classes in the fall vs going abroad or doing a gap year program or internship so finding kids who would also be there would make it feel more dorm-like.
there’s currently a facebook group which is accessible through usc online admission portal. there is also a groupme which i have tried posting the link for but it says college confidential must approve of it first. there’s currently 17 members in there!
