USC Spring Admits 2019

Anyone attending Spring Explorer USC?

DS is also admitted for Spring 2020. Initially disappointed but it may present an unexpected opportunity. He loves ancient Rome history and it’d be a great experience if he could spend the fall semester in Rome.

Anyway, I found this page from USC. Spring admits can contact currently enrolled USC students one-on-one for any questions. Thought everyone here may find it helpful. Will certainly ask DS to contact them.

@romns116 yes, we are thinking about attending, either the April 8th or 22nd.

If we do Spring Explore USC, is there any point to attend Admitted Student Day on April 27th?

@actinghopeful yes, they are guaranteed housing and the usually group spring admits together. They also have orientation just like a fall admit.

Is the Spring Explore USC event the same as orientation?

We’re thinking of skipping explore and attending orientation.

@romns116 While different… if you have been to USC and are otherwise confident in your decision, just attending orientation is fine. In 2014… my older daughter had never seen USC, so I took her out to the admitted students weekend to make sure that she wanted to commit. She returned for orientation. By 2017, my younger daughter had already seen USC, and thus she only attended orientation. As you are travelling from Texas, I would only go to orientation unless you have never even been there before.

@solarique My son was a spring admit to Marshall for Spring 2017. We attended the Explore event in spring of 2016 to decide if he wanted to commit. There was a session for Marshall students and I remember discussion of the BA/Cinematic Arts. This was 2 years ago but they said they reserve a few spaces for Spring Admits in this program. I would talk to the Spring Admit counselor about this, Jessica Frey Nielson. She was very helpful to us when we had a ton of questions. You could also reach out to Marshall to ask about this program in particular for Spring Admits. Double check as it might have changed since 2 years ago. My son loved his Fall semester experience at Richmond in London. He is a current Junior who is on the board of one of the most popular/competitive clubs at USC. He got all but 1 GE out of the way thru careful planning of classes and AP credits. Did a ton of traveling around Europe in the fall and also applied for the linc program thru Marshall in the spring and got his first choice destination of Tokyo. He said he is glad he was a Spring Admit because of all the opportunities he was able to capitalize on.

Thanks @WWWard !

We’ve visited a couple of times, he absolutely felt at home, so we may skip explore.

Do Spring admits attend the same orientation as Fall admits? I couldn’t find a separate Spring Orientation event.

@map888 Thank you so much! I will definitely talk to some of the counselors about this

@romns116 your’re welcome. Here you go… this link provides all that you should need to know…

@romns116 it looks like Spring Admit has its own orientation in the winter, as shown here, https://orientation.usc.edu/sign-up/

@WWWard, question regarding NMF and Spring Admit: do we still get 1/2 tuition and Presidential Scholar status? DS chose USC as first choice back in Oct.

@OneAndOnlySJ Of course.

Being a spring admit is simply a matter of space available in your chosen/designated academic program. Some programs fill up, and they have to offer a later start. But otherwise… spring admits are still members of the same freshman class and 100% equivalent in every other way. In fact… sometimes spring admits get bumped back up to the fall due to a lower # than expected enrollees. USC’s only other recourse would be to deny admission due to limited space available within certain programs for the fall. But spots open due to study abroad, early graduation, etc… so they fill them with those who they wanted to admit from the start anyhow. My point is that it would be a mistake for anyone to think of spring admits as lesser in any way… as they clearly are not so.

Thank you so much @WWWard. I’ve been reading up on Spring Admits in previous CC threads and USC site and come to appreciate the unique opportunities it presents. I think the next step for DS is to go talk to USC people and seek advice on knocking out GE requirements during the fall semester and getting AP credits. It looks like we will be attending one of the Explore events.

@oneandonlysj you’re welcome. good luck with the process…

I am an international student who received admission to USC for the Spring 2020 semester as a Political Economy major. I have a few queries regarding the spring admission:-

  1. Since I plan on doing a PHD in Economics in the future, after careful consideration and deliberation I have changed my mind and decided to major in the Economics/Mathematics joint major. Hence, I would like to know whether it is possible to change my major right now?

  2. May I please know whether I would have all modules/classes available during the spring term?

  3. How are summer internships and job placements managed for students enrolling in the spring semester?

  4. I have completed the IB Diploma and received scores of 7, 6 and 5 in my Higher Level subjects. Please kindly suggest how will this help me regarding the transfer of credits?

Hi everyone - We are from Chicago and my daughter was accepted for spring - we are excited about the possibility, but I have a few questions:

  1. Trying to sign up for the spring explore - the links don’t seem to be working. Anyone else having this trouble?
  2. Do these kids have any say in their dorm selection or is it just whatever opens in the spring
  3. Does this impact their ability to join the greek system or club teams?

Thanks!

@CaliorMidwest

  1. The Spring Explore links are broken. We’re having the same problem.
  2. Good question. I have no answer, would also like to know.
  3. Son isn’t interested in Greek life (except DKA) but may be interested in club/intramural sports, would like to know this also.
  1. The links are not working for us, either.
  2. We know a girl who was a spring admit this year. She did study abroad in the fall and is going to go through sorority recruitment as a sophomore. I think that was the only way she could make joining a sorority work.......but she was willing to wait in order to go to her dream school :) That is just one girl’s experience so definitely check into it, but I know that was something she really had to think about.

My D is a spring admit and we are thrilled. She will make the most of this Fall. Of course we hope there’s some space for her in the Fall, but it’s all good. By the way, the mailed packet answers so many questions! Congrats all!!!

By the way, what were you all thinking when the box wasn’t white, but it wasn’t a letter either? I thought TTP.
