Received information on USC Student Health insurance and want to make sure we understand our options. DS is fully insured through Kaiser. I think we should be able to log onto Oasis and complete a Request to Waive, thus saving over $1000 in fees.

I also undertand that the health center fee ($244 each semester) is mandatory and he would be able to use it for medical needs during the year. He would also be able to use a Kaiser facility in LA. Does this sound correct?

Everything you said is about right.

You can waive health insurance if you have your own private insurance-- just bring forms during orientation or during welcome week or whenever.

Health Center fee is mandatory. Your son can enter the health center whenever he gets sick or whatever. They have doctors staffed there and nurses. He should not have to pay for the visit to the health center (because fee covers), unless he is getting some kind of shot or scan or test (possibly some other exceptions). Also if they cannot handle the injury/sickness your son has at the health center and he needs to be transferred somewhere else/he needs to go see a specialist, you probably have to pay/get your private insurance to pay because you don’t have USC insurance.
Okay, don’t take my word on this but if the Health Center needs to charge you for something (ex. a shot or a test), you can get the bill and send it to your private insurance and the insurance should pay for it. NOTE: does not work for all insurance plans, it happens to work with mine.

I guess if he gets treated at a Kaiser facility/in-network place, you don’t even have to deal anything with USC and just use your private insurance.

Health insurance waiver will be online via OASIS starting this upcoming registration (I think I saw that it will be up in June or July). You don’t need to bring any forms to Orientation, although perhaps that option will be available as well.

I had Kaiser as a student and I did the waiver – but I was still allowed to go to the Health Center on campus when I couldn’t make it to Kaiser and I have never charged/billed extra for shots, bloodwork, etc.

Once I got a car, I started driving to Kaiser instead. There are two close to USC – one on Sunset Blvd. in Los Feliz/Hollywood and one in Culver City.
