Are there summer sessions for incoming freshmen at all? I know the UCs all do, but I'm not sure about other private colleges like USC. On the housing application, there was an option for summer housing. Does anyone know anything about this?

What are you looking to do? Take summer classes?

Yeah. I found a website on it, [Summer 2008 | Schedule of Classes](302 Found), but I can’t be sure that it’s open to freshmen. The Thematic Option one looks like it is, but it says “for high school students,” as opposed to for incoming freshman, so I don’t know.

…bump bump? :(

I think that 'high school students" refers to students who will be continuing HS the next year. Many private colleges have summer programs geared towards HS students, not incoming freshmen.
The UCs probably allow incoming freshmen to start in the summer because it’ll reduce the strain on classes during the rest of the year and allow students to graduate in a timely manner.
If you want to take classes over the summer, take some at a CC that can transfer as GE credit because that’ll open up more space for majors/minors once you’re at USC.

Ah goodness. Nevermind! I called in and they said no; when they say we’re admitted for Fall 2009, that means we begin school then. No earlier I’ll be going to a CC then!

I’m doing the same think this summer to take care of some GE requirements before freshman year. Make sure you look at the articulation agreements between USC and the CC you’ll be going for the summer.

Okay thanks! Is there a USC website that has that stuff or should I just speak to a CC counselor?

[USC ARR : Articulation](http://www.usc.edu/dept/ARR/articulation/)

Thanks! But…
"
Students still in high school: College courses taken before high school graduation can fulfill GE categories I, II, III and V, but not the writing requirement, the diversity requirement, or the foreign language requirement. Courses must be taught on the college campus by college faculty to earn credit; courses taught in a high school setting, even if they are transcripted by a college or university, do not earn credit at USC.
USC students: Once you have enrolled at USC, you cannot take transfer courses to fulfill GE or the writing requirement. You may take transfer courses in the summer only to fulfill diversity or foreign language, obtain equivalence to a USC course, or earn elective units. Don’t forget to file a pre-approval form (see Part IV, C.2)."
Darn restrictions.

During the summer, you will not be a high school student nor a current USC student, so you are allowed to take GEs at the community college. They will transfer over as long as they are on the specific college’s articulation agreement with USC.

Oh, good. I was worried because it said “before high school graduation” and I have “enrolled at USC” already. Thanks!

PS: So can I take diversity courses in the summer as well? It states that diversity courses are limited to students already enrolled.

Yes, you can take diversity courses and foreign language courses. Here’s the website about transferring courses to USC as an admitted student:
[USC ARR : Articulation : Spring Admits](http://www.usc.edu/dept/ARR/articulation/spring_admits.html)

It says it’s for Spring admits, but it applies to Fall admits as well.

Thanks again! Would you recommend taking some GEs in the summer? Are they an integral part of the USC academic experience, or is it okay if I skip them?

I’m bumping this thread up because I found the OASIS Pre-Approval for Summer Transfer Courses website: https://camel2.usc.edu/OASIS/PreApprXferCrses.aspx, and I can’t select any GE courses over the summer. Do I need to call in to figure this out? Any other thoughts out there?

If you need preapproval for GE courses, look at this website:

[USC ARR : Articulation : Spring Admits](http://www.usc.edu/dept/ARR/articulation/spring_admits.html)

It’s for spring admits, but it works for Fall admits as well. You will have to fax the preapproval form and write fall admit preapproval instead.

You can also try getting them preapproved through oasis.

Thanks again nhsharvard! The GEs don’t show up on OASIS, so I guess I’ll write the Fall Admit Preapproval and check to make sure it goes through.

NonSensecent, you’re welcome. You can fax the form (only fill out the first page) to speed up the processing.

So I don’t have to sign the second page and fill out the “I have met with my advisor, _______…” area? :)
