USC (Thornton School) vs. Umiami (Frost School)

I have recently gotten accepted into the Frost School of Music at Umiami (with $37,000 grant) and into the Thornton School of Music at USC. Both are great schools and have the same "studio/jazz guitar" program. I was wondering if anyone here with any musical knowledge of these schools had any input on what school you think is better and why. I know that the scholarship I got at Umiami makes it a strong pull to go there, but at the same time it is hard to deny such a prestigious school as USc is.

I can only reference what I know about USC as son is a freshman there majoring in the Popular Music Performance program. Most guitar studs at Thornton are in the studio/jazz guitar program (not popular music performance) because of the specificity of the skills developed in the studio/jazz program. However, there are some amazing popular music students who form bands and when they need a guitar stud the studio guitar program is the place that has the best.

USC has several other advantages that Miami probably can’t just due to location. Unusual opportunities to perform with and interact with key industry people (executives and performers who live in LA). Got to see one of the studs perform on stage with the Steve Miller Band this fall and he was amazing and obviously impressed Steve quite a bit. The entertainment industry is full of USC graduates and the network is significant and the alums are above average in their helpfulness for USC students and grads. Film, theatre and other entertainment fields often have cross over opportunities and those programs are all top tier at USC. Son has said that there are 3 world class guitarists in the studio program this year. Being around the best musicians will only continue to push you to be your best.

I am sure that Frost is also a wonderful opportunity and program. Congratulations on the great options and good luck wherever you go!

mcohen777, congrats on your acceptances. My post here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1064576103-post4.html</a> has a link to some of the tricks I’ve found useful in searching the forum.

There’s a lot here in general about Miami/Frost as well as USC/Thornton, as well as some jazz specific threads.

This may prove useful if you haven’t already seen it http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/154774-best-university-jazz-programs.html</a></p>

mcohen777, Have you had lessons with any of the jazz guitar teachers at these schools? If so, how did you feel about the teachers?
