USC Transfer Decisions 2009 OFFICIAL THREAD

Accepted - CLAS/BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

Stats:[ul]
[] College transferring from: Montclair State University - NEW JERSEY!
[] Entering as: It says sophomore, but I’m a junior. I think I have 62 instead of 64 credits or something
[] GPA: Applied with a 3.63 GPA, but it went down after my stupid chem teacher this semester! bahhh! D:
[] Units completed: 62 including Spring
[] Pre-reqs completed: Hm, I think all of them except the language. But I speak 2 languages, so I’ll take the language exam at USC.
[] GEs completed: Everything, just need to take the mandatory ones.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: I played 2 years of Intramural volleyball, soccer and football. Won championships every year in every sport  haha hope to continue that at USC. I volunteer tutor, which is now 2000+ hours. I also volunteer at the hospital hospice.
[] Job/Work Experience: Manager at the Student Recreation Center at my current institution. Also Manager at a Gas Station. Balancing two jobs trying to pay for tuition is tough. :frowning:
[] Essays (subject and responses): The passion one. I spent nearly 2 months perfecting that essay, and I think that was a huge factor as to why I might of gotten in. It was so creative imo.
[] Letters of Recommendation: 2, one from my doctor I intern for and one from my biology professor. Both were excellent.
[/ul]Other:[ul]
[] Other schools applied to: I applied to University of Texas at Austin and Rutgers and got accepted to both. But the only one that mattered for me was USC!
[] Comments: I think that the GPA is not nearly as factored in as people think. I have a 3.6 which is average compared to others, but I have 2 internships with doctors who are known worldwide. I also juggle two jobs, and continue to volunteer the way I do which takes up a lot of time. That plus being a molecular biology major is near impossible but I try and do the best I can to the best of my abilities. I was an exceptional student in high school but I was really screwed over by my administration when it came to recognition and respect. I vowed to myself I would get into USC (my 1st choice) while everyone else got into their number 1’s. Facing financial troubles, I didn’t even bother applying to USC, but now I am and finally got in. Dreams come true, just keep fighting. That’s what lifes all about. Trust me, when you look back on your accomplishments, you’ll be proud of the leap you took and the way it sculpts your life.

To those accepted, congratulations. I will bring the Jack and Pizza. To those rejected, we may not be bound by a mutual university, but we are bound by our values and beliefs. Appeal or Apply again, I’m sure you will get in. To all those moms and dads out there supporting us new Trojans, bless your hearts. I couldn’t have done it without your support and wisdom. I’m appreciative to everyone who has helped me on this journey. California, here I come. Fight On!

Accepted - CLAS/BIO

Stats:[ul]
[] College transferring from: Hawaii Pacific University(HPU) - hate that place… :stuck_out_tongue:
[] Entering as: Sophomore
[] GPA: 3.5 on app, has since gone down a little… :stuck_out_tongue:
[] Units completed: Transferrable ca. 42
[] Units in progress: 15
[] Pre-reqs completed: I think most. Don’t really remember and can’t bother looking it up :stuck_out_tongue: Not language though, but I speak 3 languages, so I’ll get it done
[] GEs completed: Think most.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: A LOT! Soccer 15+ years, Tennis 10+ years, Snowboarding, Golf, other sports, Volunteer work, Started a Charity(raised a bunch of money and clothes), and a lot more. Like seriously, A LOOT! :stuck_out_tongue:
[] Job/Work Experience: Lots of small jobs at soccer and tennis tournaments and as a referee etc. Also worked at a home for mentally/physically disabled people.
[] Essays (subject and responses): Seemed good at the time, but now I guess it could seem sorta generic. Wrote about how being a soccer player(and one of the top players in the country :D) affected me from being a shy kid to being confident, learning leadership, hard work, discipline and stuff  Showed off a lot of qualities without bragging I guess
[] Letters of Recommendation: 3.
Humanities teacher said I was a great student/fun person, all my classmates liked me etc
CHEM teacher said I was in top 2-3% of his students ever. Really nice person etc.
Anthropology teacher, I didn’t see this one, but I’m betting it was awesome, he was my favorite teacher and he loved me as a student, ended the course with like 105% :stuck_out_tongue:
[/ul]Other:[ul]
[] Other schools applied to: CU- Boulder = Accepted. A few others, but I never finished those apps, cuz I’m lazy :stuck_out_tongue: But it worked out :D!
[li] Comments: I think my strengths were my EC’s and LOR’s. I had some really awesome EC’s and I made sure to show the 2 most impressive ones(soccer and starting a charity) in my essay(soccer) and one of my short answers(charity). I think this contributed to giving those things extra weight which was important. Also, was like at a national level in Tennis aswell and a bunch of other stuff like I said.
[/li]

Also, VERY IMPORTANT, think back through your life and try to include all those things you did. Last november I applied to NYU(then withdrew my application because it took too long), but in that app I had almost none of my EC’s because I didn’t really think them through! This time, I really spent A LOT of time on remembering all the things I’ve worked with, small to big, all the EC’s and everything!

Also, take some time to think about your essay, my essay was good, but I could have written an awesome one, I just didn’t think about it long enough. During the months between sending in my app and now, I’ve thought of like 10 very personal(some sad, some funny) things I could have written superb essays about:)

Lastly, I sent the admissions committee a personal letter, ca 3 pages, where I stated that I wanted it to not give me an upperhand or anything, just serve as a follow-up to my application and show my interest. I sincerely wrote about my dreams at USC, what aspects I loved, what I hoped to accomplish, a bit about what I wanted to study, I even made a list of all the classes I wanted to take and the number of credits etc  I think they really appreciated all the time I put into it  Also, made a funny little ‘mathematical’ formula showing that ‘[my name] at USC’ = amazing^2! :stuck_out_tongue: they might have found it clever :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry for making this so long, but I wanted to share everything so that future applicants can get a heads up and some tips! I AM MORE THAN WILLING TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ON PM SO FEEL FREE! :)

I’m so excited! Congrats to all the others who’ve made it, and to all those still waiting and those that are planning on applying, GOOD LUCK!!
